This is the bit that puzzles me about the development squad; if we have the likes if Dell n Carvalho warming the bench in the reserves, what is the point. Is that money well spent?

They also play other matches just for Development squad players.

They will have to break their way through the reserves then onto the first team.

Personally I'd rather have the young development players given time to see if they are good enough, rather than playing players who can't cut it already in this league.

100% agree with that. Its time for me that we ship a few of the reserves out on loan or permanently to either get game time and find form or to clear space in the wage bill. It's definitely time for quality over quantity in this league.

We will never know if these guys in the development squad are good enough unless they play more games and gradually make steps up.

The issue with a development squad/youth team/academy - whatever you want to call them - is time.

Rome wasn't built in a day and if a club is serious about producing its own players then you may have to wait 4-5-6 years before seeing anything significant. I don't think Stoke have produced a single academy player -yet - who is in the first team and they have thrown millions of Coates' money at it already.

The Vale are struggling for money and the question remains for lower division teams - is it better to spend what you have on a good first team player or two, or put money into the youth set-up with no guarantee of success and maybe having to wait for several years.

Crewe set up their academy years ago when Gradi had the foresight and transfer money to afford to do it - and it keeps the club afloat as well as bringing players through to the first team. Ideally, it is the way to go. But in this day and age when finances are very tight and most clubs don't receive big transfer fees any longer who can find 1-2 million to set these things up and then have the patience to wait to see it flourish when fans are anxious about the first X1?

We probably all need to try and see the bigger, long-term picture but who on here would not swop the development squad for 1-2 better quality players in the first team next weekend?
