Petetion to sign- don't jail this man

I'm no great fan of The Sun newspaper, and am also against people owning guns, but I would ask people to sign this petition below,

The man concerned has clearly no bad motive and should be treated with respect and dignity, not harassed by silly jobsworths when the world is full of more important proiblems that need attention-

https://www.change.org/p/jeremy-wright-mp-stop-sas-legend-going-to-prison-for-keeping-falklands-trophy-handgun-freepat?utm_source=action_alert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=565178&alert_id=fDLIIXkhPI_XBFh2ahr2QD%2B0TwQbITOFVVhKlDClJN4vchn%2B7kU5%2BU%3D

The following points are crucial:-

The weapons were never loaded or used in the UK, and they were not in the public domain.

Further, because of Albert's post-SAS work in security for non-government organisations in Iraq and Afghanistan, he missed an SAS weapons amnesty where he could have safely returned the weapons.

Others have gone free for the same offence.

He gets what he gets and should be treated no differently than anyone else having firearms in their possession.

Would you see this man get the same treatment as someone who has a stash of guns or other weapons ready to be used for a bank robbery or terrorist attack then ?

It is not the same, nor is it like in the US where some people keep weapons close to them and ready to use.

I suspect you are just being provocative with that post, and the content of the original post is less important to you than who posted it (again).

You seem to be full of your own self importance whereas I dont give a rats ass who made the post.

Keeping firearms is an offense.... what they take in mitigation is up to the judge... the possible use or the firearms, character etc.

I can see both sides of the argument here.

The fact is whether he has fired it or not he has it and ammunition to go with it, this isn't America, we don't want guns everywhere, especially unlicensed ones. What happens if someone upsets him in the future or indeed it falls into the wrong hands? He clearly should not have kept it and hopefully it will rightfully be destroyed and he will be punished under the law of the land.

That said it could be argued prison is severe because despite the judge saying he had no choice, he clearly did as the suspended sentence handed down to the younger man proves unless there were key factors that distinguished the two cases?

I'm in two minds as to whether to sign it or not on this case I really am. I never believed Tony Martin should have gone to prison but that is a completely different case I guess.

Be interesting to see how things pan out.

As a shooter myself I have to abide a lot of seemingly stupid regulations. But I obey them. He could have had the gun deactivated or even requested a Section 5 (I think) exemption. Rarely given but would have been worth his time.

There have been cases where people have a few guns without a licence and have avoided prison because they do not hold any ammunition. I think that is the difference here. If he wanted to keep the 9mm pistol as a memento then he wouldn't need the ammunition.

The Enfield revolver could be classed as an antique as its calibre might now be obsolete - potentially .455 calibre. The "semi - automatic" part is bizarre. If it isn't a gun then it isn't a gun. It will be a piece of metal.

The authorities have decided to go heavy handed on the existing regulations in this case. I would prefer this to having yet more regulations to cope with non-existant problems. Of course I'd actually prefer a reppeal of the handgun laws, but that is probably never going to happen.

Northern Ireland is different though - not only can you own a handgun but can also keep it for self defence in a public place.
