"Ceramic Valley" enterprise zone gets approval

Why does it have to have such a crappy sounding name to make it sound like silicon valley- what would be wrong with Potteries enterprise zone or North Staffs regeneration zone ?

Over hyped it may be. My concern is the area has already had a huge influx of blue chip companies in the local jobs economy, and many of them have been low paid distribution units. Also the well paid jobs that existed one of these blue chip companies required several of the existing workforce to relocate from where they initially came from (Weymouth) and the culture that followed seemed to be 'jobs for the boys''.

That is a concern as well for the potential jobs at these sites...many may be skilled or un-skilled but the existing workforce will come to the area from where they came and keep the well paid jobs thus only the poor paid jobs will come to the area. What the area needs is a manufacturing base and nothing else...something like a car plant or a chocolate factory which promotes long term jobs and security. Unfortunately, because of the Enterprise zones potential locations, I cannot see that companies will want to put up jobs where there is an element of security and isolation required. We may also see a similar situation to the huge warehouse which stood unused for months at Ravensdale, Tunstall before JCB moved in to the premises...yet again another warehouse.

I wouldn't knock the name of this enterprise zone, ceramics are synonomous with Stoke-on Trent so it does make some sense. I take the point about warehouse work but at the end of the day they're jobs and if S-o-T by its location is a good fit for such jobs then so be it but think long term.

High Tech industries usually bud around Universities, Staffs Uni. has a long standing tradition in Ceramic Technology and only 30 miles away are two guys who recently won a Nobel Prize in Material Science and given the ever expanding role played by all types of different materials in modern day life etc with some vision, cross fertilization of ideas and money perhaps an initiative/institute based around the design, use and manufacture of new Materials could happen in this area.
