A lot of it was down to the lack of protection offered by the midfield. That remains a more pressing area of concern. The 4 first choice defenders and the 2 goalkeepers are all competent at this level.

 

Also, I wonder if other clubs have this obsession with pace at the back? An ability to position yourself correctly negates the need for real pace as a defender. How fast were Glover, Aspin or Swan?

Totally agree, who said "you defend from the front"? All 11 players have a defensive role to play.

Disagree, we haven't got one defender good enough for this division and it showed last season. Quality centre back please.

 

I'd tend to agree with that, although I think Dicko -if indisciplined - is a decent left back.

 

When the season ended I was rather hoping that we might see 3 new defenders through the door as we leaked far too many goals last year.

 

Of course, the midfield has a part to play but a lot of goals were down to a lack of pace in the centre, backing off and off until it's too late, not closing men down and poor positional sense. We really did concede some dreadful goals.

 

Another right sided defender is a priority - I agree with you, otherwise we are just rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic.
