York v Fleetwood

It's amazes me how, following last night's postponement, this match can be re-arranged for tomorrow evening when we all have to wait a minimum of 10 days for FA Cup replays to be played because of policing requirements. Amazing what the power of Sky Television can do even for the likes of League 2 games.

It's not just TV requirements, the whole playoff schedule is threatened. The Final's booked so they've got to get this game played rapido.

I understand that but why do we have this stupid rule for FA Cup replays when quite clearly it is not necessary.

You really think the reason it's been rearranged so quickly is because of sky? The second leg is on Friday and I think they'd prefer to play the first leg first. As for playing cup replays as quick, 10 days makes perfect sense. Programs have to be printed and stewards etc arranged, not to mention away fans making arrangements to travel. We drew at home to Plymouth and had to go down there for the replay, do you think it would've made sense to play that 3 days later?

Modern times I am afraid, in 1951 Vale drew with Stoke on the Sat in the FA Cup, the replay was on Monday afternoon, no floodlights in those days.

Yes and the gate was good. The replay was at Stoke, although I think the original match was at Stoke as well. There was no segregation and no substitutes and Stoke finished with only nine fit players but still won. Nowadays, if it was accepted that the replay was the following week, provisional arrangements could be made in advance. Even now it is quite common for the away team to bring with them tickets for the replay if necessary. In fact cup replays are still held the following week up to the First Round Proper. There is no good reason why all replays should not be held in the following week.

This stupid 10-day rule was introduced at the police's "suggestion/insistence" in the 80's. Their reasoning was that they needed more time to plan for replays - but those were different days with regards to hooliganism.

The worst thing is, it's a blanket ruling - so a Torquay v Hartlepool replay is subject to the same rule as a Man Utd v Liverpool replay.

Which basically means the police aren't confident of handling any numbers of away supporters whatsoever without 10 days notice.

FA Cup replays were always better whilst still "on the boil" from a couple of days earlier.

Chuck in stupid TV schedules, Premier League club indifference, the semis being held at Wembley and there you have it....a ruined FA Cup.
