Football clubs to strike.

For Us All

75% is rediculous. Surely this is short sighted as players will simply not join, meaning the government get 0% tax

Surely it's everyone and not just footballers. Obviously they have as much right to protest and strike as everyone else (though it's an odd one as you usually strike against employer who this time can't do anything about it).

I understand the argument about losing skills but it's also a way of combatting a wealth divide that is growing.

I've no problem with those who earn more paying more tax but it's a balancing act..(very) high earners will go elsewhere where tax rates are lower or will do all they can to avoid the higher rates resulting in a lower tax take meaning that effectively the poorer pay more

Personal tax rates and company tax rates must be an incentive to business, investment and growth in the UK (and indeed France) and not a deterrent

It says it has the backing of 85% of the population though. Its not something aimed at just one job or industry is it? So it's the same for everyone, so why only footballers. Will players earning up to 14 million a year after tax gain much sympathy?

Seems it's not the players organising this action but the club owners...reducing their ability to compete with other clubs which they see as an indirect restraint of trade

"Jean-Pierre Louvel, president of the Union of Professional Football Clubs (UCPF), announced on Thursday that the round of matches scheduled from 29 November to 2 December would not be played. He said: "It's a historic moment for French football. We're talking about the death of French football."

I can't see any indication that millionaire players are objecting

French football clubs will go on strike to oppose the goverments plans to tax the mega-rich.The 75% tax-rate may force many footballers to move abroad and bring about the death of the French League.

Views and opinions please.

My heart and instincts say great idea--soak the rich. In reality when my head takes over, evidence has historically shown that the higher governments set tax, the less actually gets paid! I'm old enough to remember Harold Wilson's government in the 60's having a top-rate of tax @ 98%. Guess what? Anyone liable for that rate either moved out of the country or employed hot-shot accountants to find ways to get around having to pay it. Result--ineffectual taxation and therefore less for the revenue's coffers. President Hollande arguably only won the election in France on the promise of less austerity, but his policies have been gradually unraveling over the last twelve months. I daresay that this latest ruse will be welcomed by the majority of French people, but in all reality it is little more than desperation 'gesture politics' and window dressing!
