Uncorroborated rumours. guesses, speculation.....

Given that some fans are getting concerned about the use of the above in the Port Vale Present Section, perhaps Rob should set-up a separate section for those threads that potentially could cause upset or embarrassment to the Club or some fans.

A bit like a "spoiler alert" for TV progs.

That way, those of a sensitive disposition won't have to read the stuff and become either emotional or angry about threads, posts or posters that they don't like.

:) Yer mean like bull **** rumours which arnt true :)

Based on his study of the newspaper column, Knapp divided those rumors into three types:

1.Pipe dream rumors: reflect public desires and wished-for outcomes.(e.g. Japan's oil reserves were low and thus World War II would soon end.)

2.Bogie or fear rumors reflect feared outcomes.(e.g. An enemy surprise attack is imminent).

3.Wedge-driving rumors intend to undermine group loyalty or interpersonal relations (e.g. American Catholics were seeking to avoid the draft; German-Americans, Italian-Americans, Japanese-Americans were not loyal to the American side).

I think we have enough sections as it is.

I used to work in customer services and part of the job was managing online forums. I was always told in my forum training that "less is more" - in that people won't post in a section that isn't busy (makes sense, you're most likely to respond to something rather than start a topic up) so it's much better to have a few busy sections than lots of quiet, unused ones.

For that reason, I don't think it's right to have a dedicated "rumour" section, I'd rather that they remained part and parcel of "Port Vale Present" but that people recognise them for what they are - unfounded rumours, gossip and hearsay and a small part of the overall conversation that occurs on OVF.

I think this would be a good idea.

The rumours and unproven theories were so severe that several posters could not refrain from exclaiming expletives and profanities towards various posts/posters. If that's the anger and distress that the rumours are causing then a separate thread would help ensure those who have a phobia of the untruth would not have to subject themselves to such a torturous ordeal.

You are spot on, oh wise one. ;)

What's more, a dedicated section will just encourage them.

Can I ask why this thread has been rapidly moved? It was a serious attempt to try and keep everyone happy.

At least let it run for a day or so and gauge the mood for it.

Whatever fans may sell, we always will AND should speculate about our Club irrespective of whether it upsets NS.

By "them" do you mean fans?

No, my friend, those who spread ill-founded "bloke down pub" rumours.

There is a difference between discussing stuff that has some factual basis and rumours. Did you read all the internet stories about where Tom Pope was last season, having a medical, about to sign, etc.?

With respect, mate, that's very different.

There is genuine concern amongst people that I trust that all is not well. We shall see......

There is a difficulty in corroborating rumours... who do you accept as corroboration?... the person who told the person who posted?

If we look at the last rumour, as an example, there is a grain of truth at the foundation "contractors/someone havent/hasnt been paid"... thats is not in dispute, it was corroborated in smurfs statement.

Most people seem to think the information was leaked from the club but it could just as easily have been leaked from the other end, the contractor/someone... Im not saying thats the case because I dont know, but its just as likely.

The transition between "someone hasnt been paid" to "the clubs in trouble" isnt a giant leap of anyones imagination. As rumours spread they usually get distorted and interpreted, bits added or left out and reinterpreted, so a contractor hasnt been paid ends up as the clubs in trouble and smurf wants to sell.... or... send reinforcements were going to advance becomes send three and fourpence were going to a dance.

Sometimes several things get processed into the original grain of truth by the people in the chain, conclusions are drawn on other events and interpreted as part of the fact... ie. the stand not being finished seems to some as added weight to the overall statement that the club is in trouble whereas in fact there may be no connection at all.

There is no way to stop rumors... even if the internet, every pub in the land and all the football grounds were shut down there would still be people talking and interpreting what they have heard... its basically just gossip... not gospel.
