Clearly the administration and culture of cycling was poor for many years, drug taking took hold and it was necessary to take drugs to compete. In that sense Armstrong doesn't stand out from many other riders. There are many losers including all those spectators of the Tour de France and other tours. I suspect Armstrong is now going to be taken down in civil and criminal law and his life will be a living hell. The end of his ability to rationalize his behaviour now he has been exposed and confessed will make it harder for him to cope as well.

Just watched the second interview, haven't seen the first part. He seems to me to be one step removed, cold and calculating and comments matter of fact about details.

 

But he still has an air of arrogance and I stand by the assessment that he's only sorry he got caught. Strange strange character.

His story is already getting penned for a film about his cheating. If it gets to the box office number one they should test it for performance enhancement.

In general, crime is rationalized by the person. This is particularly true of fraud. They rationalize that they are not really committing fraud or doing something wrong. The start of fraud is usually small scale and then increases as it becomes easier to rationalize.

 

Another aspect of this is the real reason for deception. In fraud the use of deception is to cover up a pressure or motivation that cannot be shared. It can't be shared because the person would be ashamed and that shame is about the loss of status that would ensue. That can be loss of status with friends but obviously the loss of status can escalate to be prison etc. It is the loss of status that is the motivation to cover something up not concern about the value of what has been gained by a crime being discovered.

Armstrong is now trying to compensate by saying he will help authorities clean up the sport and by implication placing himself in his view in the midst of normal behaviour in his time.
