Delgado - aaaaaargh!

This is turning in to a nightmare!

If he was a Spanish international, then i am Katie Price without the underwiring...Also a player who promised more than he delivered. Part of that era when we bough Kenny Todd from Wolves for 40K, Delagado cost 35K apparently, always played well against us, then as soon as he donned a white shirt, he morphed in to a club footed numpty who couldn't play for toffee. Looking back, we spent a lot of money at that time on decent players, (Peter Farrel, Felix Healy et al?) who just didn't do it for us. Eimonn O'Keefe anyone? If we could spend £40k on a player today, who would we buy?

Think I may be thinking of Gary West, he was a centre half and just as iffy!

 

Gary West was indeed a centre-back but much later, played in our promotion season at the end of the 80s I think.

 

He was alright, not in Pollards class!

..and yes Tosh, i think there are quite a few of us on here who could go on at some length about the Vale back then - and none of it was very good. Still, character building and all that - it gives us a reference point for the various levels of garbage served up from time to time today. We can alway say "you should've been here when x was playing for the Vale"

Wasn't Gary West the player Seth called "fifty pence head" because of his hairstyle? Better player than those we have mentioned on here - decent stopper at a higher level.

Yeah, what was Rudgie thinking? There we were, battle hardened against all manner of rubbish on the pitch, and then along he came and transformed out team in to a passing unit and something I was proud to be associated with. Tsk. And we had the best fanzine in the country as well. He has a lot to answer for that Rudge bloke - raised our hopes way beyond what could reasonably expected..the mad fool...

Need to check the old programmes to confirm that one Tosh - he was tall, so may have been pushed in to the middle, but lordy lordy, if Gary Pollard was the answer, what on earth was the question? Give me big Dave Harris or John Ridley any day.

Picture him as in lobbing it out of play from centre defence, missing headers, letting it bounce in our penalty box, tearing upfield and getting out of position - yeah, that's how I picture him as well...
