One alternative is to perhaps bite the bullet and accept we aren't going to do anything between now and say 2020 and use that time to develop the England manager for Qatar...not sure who that should be but maybe the FA should just accept that as the target. They really do need to bring in a panel to select whom that should be and maybe Hiddink, Hoddle etc would be better employed putting that plan together and ultimately selecting who it should be rather than actually being the England manager.

Of course there should be a long term plan for the team and management looking 10 years ahead, there are competitions every 2 years, a 4 year term for a manager would seem reasonable. a style of play to be developed etc. But occasionally there is the need for a short term, or emergency manager. Assistant managers do not necessary have the skills to take charge, nor should managers have to serve a trail period as an assistant. I shall leave it to others to suggest candidates for the vacancies. The world has moved on since the days we did not enter the World Cup, as we were unbeaten by foreign teams (Except Eire), and thus World champions.
