As of this season, FL competitions (league and JPT) will only allow 5 subs, not 7. The Carling Cup is the only exception.

After an EGM today the Football League have reduced the number of substitutes per game from 7 to 5 because some clubs are finding it too costly.

7 subs was always a bit much at this level.

I personally thought that 7 subs could do a job at this level.

It's a good money saving prospect for this level, as although it doesnt sound a lot, no extra fees, and kits washing etc.

this is about right for football league, mess on with a really insignificant issue like this ( 7 or 5 who gives a ****) but they cant agree on goal line technology, financial issues across all levels of football , clubs overextending themselves financially with relatively a slap on the wrist.

the cost issues of substitutes is negligable unless they make clubs further reduce squad sizes, you still have to pay most players even when they not on the bench so this sounds to me like they had to come up with something to justify why they have these egms but dont actually want to rock the boat too much and introduce something radical.

Although it doesnt sound much I'm sure it will save a few clubs a bit of money. Appearance bonus, win bonus, Travel and accommodation.

What can I say....I remember the days of only 3 subs allowed on the bench and only 1 being allowed to be used :(

Sensible decision. Having all the subs these days means you no longer have the fun of occaisionally seeing outfield players in goal.

It was good for young/youth-teamers to get to the bench and if we went like 5-0 up we could bring the young/youth-teamers on and they could be given the chance.
