I know that its too late now,

 

But I can't believe that we never had a campain going when V2001 took over to bring Rudgie back to the club.

 

It would surely have worked once Horton left.

 

I know this thread won't last very long but I had to get it off my chest. Anyone else got any thoughts on this?

Maybe the fact that the club had just had to pay John Rudge about £250,000 thanks to the heroic Bill Bell had something to do with it. Oh, and Rudge deserved that money too.

It is nice to look back and be sentimental, but we have to find a solution for the future - who and what that is, i dont know.........

I loved the man and once met him in church in Trent Vale! I was truly gutted when Bully Bell sacked him and marched up Hamil Road in my flat cap in disgust. He is a true gentleman and his knowledge of football and man management is second to non and I'd have him back tomorrow as director of football.....if we could get him on a free from his present club....

Rudgey should never have been sacked in the first place. I literally would do anything for him to come back.

Said it then (18th Jan 99) and still think it now - huge mistake. I remember getting angry when callers to P&G/section of Bycars were calling for his head.

 

No matter what some achieve and how hard anyone tries there always someone who thinks they know better.

A few days ago I dreamt that we were playing away at Old Trafford in the FA Cup, losing 1-0 in injury time. Then Martin Foyle pops up and glances in a header to take United back to Vale Park for a replay. Rudgey did a little celebration on the touchline.

 

When I woke up I lay in bed and felt sad for a few minutes, like you do when you dream of relatives who have passed on.

 

The Rudge era was a long time ago. It isn't coming back. John is an old man and doesn't need the hassle of football management.

Bell was very envious of the adulation that Rudge recieved but still took the credit for updating the stadium....with the profits from Rudgie's player wheeler dealing! As soon as the club started to decline he took delight in sacking the falt capped one and I think we have been a poorer set up since them - God how we need this integrity now!

He's in a great job at Stoke now, a little retirement number, going abroad scouting and staying in top hotels - all expenses paid. Hell of a change from painting Vale Park toilets!
