Interesting interview. I quite admire people who can have suffered what she has and yet still take an objective view, even if you don't necessarily agree.

I'm uncomfortable with the idea of summary state executions and in an ideal situation 'Jihadi John' would have been taken prisoner and been put on trial and, hopefully, given an appropriate custodial sentence (ie, life with no parole). Personally I don't believe in the death sentence (although I am often tempted to change my mind!).

I don't think 'an eye for an eye' Old Testament revenge is particularly effective and almost all conflicts end with treaties and agreements such as Versailles in 1919 after millions had been slaughtered, although it is also true that often military conflict is required to bring some parties to the table.

However, ISIS are a different kind of enemy and like it or not we - and by we I include all civilised countries irrespective of political system or religious belief - need to eradicate them for reasons similar to those for which Nazism needed eradicating. The situation in Syria has to be viewed in a war context and the world should not stand by and allow these madmen to ride roughshod over other people and their lands. Funnily enough it's never the 'Jihadi John' types who volunteer to be suicide bombers but they're all too willing to encourage others to do such things which, to my mind, places them in the dangerous 'politician' area. Therefore, they have to understand they do not have impunity from the consequences of war and by taking this guy out it sends a message to the other exponents of oppression that there is a consequence to their actions, thus, if they choose to continue they may well end up paying the price. Some of these extremists will continue regardless but I believe it makes their propaganda less attractive so, in this case, I think the US were right in eliminating him.

It's not as though we had the people on the ground to arrest him. He was in one of their strngholds. The U.S. Probably had good Intel, and had to make a decision to hit him right there and then, or risk him disappearing again. For this one, I can't blame them for making that choice. Isis are an army who are threatening a number of nations. This was just an act of war in response.

It was stated special forces would need to be employed to take him out but with no guarantee. In fact they said to get him would be virtually impossible.
