If IDS had a brain he would realise that not only landlords but mortgage lenders don't approve of sub-letting, this iniquitious tax has already caused death and if Cameron had any common sense he'd have scrubbed the plans at an early stage.Well heeled toffs going into career politics should be outlawed.

It would obviously depend on the terms of your tenancy agreement, but I would have thought a lot of private landlords don't allow sub-letting.

The bedroom tax is genuinely evil. IDS is a complete ****.

That little room you occupied now costs over £50 a month now.........

IDS is daft, but the solution is, if you have a house with more bedrooms than required and the state pay for it, why shouldnt you be taxed on it?

There are some families desperate for a house with 2+ rooms as they have 2/3 kids, why should someone living alone in a 2+ bedroom house benefit from it.

Hopefully it will further encourage people to go and get a job.

Taking in a lodger isn't sub-letting, although some tenancy agreements do proscribe taking in lodgers. Sub-letting gives someone exclusive use of a room or section of a building. Lodgers have shared facilities, and no exclusive use, although they would expect privacy in a bedroom, but would usually expect the "landlord" to provide cleaning service in the room and bedlinen. A sub-let would normally have a written contract, a lodger would usually have a verbal contract, and might expect only 24 -48 hours to move out if required.

I quite agree, I've worked in social housing for 25+ years, and over/under occupation has always been an issue. The problem always came when an elderly person or couple who had lived in their 3 or 4 bed house for 35 years were asked to move to something more suitable, and let a smaller family move in. Local newspapers love the "elderly couple forced out of home they lived in for all their married life stories" - issues of being settled in the community, local links, house they have looked after, ...etc, etc, etc,

Good to see the other side of the coin getting an airing
