It's a sad indication on life that Toney has just got a financial penalty that will hardly scratch his bank balance.

Back in 1964 a number of players were rightly sent to prison for up to 18 months and banned from football sine die for getting involved in a betting scandal.

Professional football is so in bed with betting that the game is sure to be compromised.

Dishonesty, i.e. 'Getting away with it' reflects on life today so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised at the acceptance of cheating in its many forms is rife in the game today. In fact calling professional football a 'game' is an insult to the amateur game that is played throughout the country with such passion.

More concerning to me is football/sports general relationship with the gambling industry.

 

Find it quite hypocritical that an individual is (rightly) banned for gambling, yet his club, continue to have a gambling company on their shirts, and probably will continue to do so until it's banned in a few years. Everything sport related is affiliated, or sponsoring by these companies. Every ad break is littered with them. There really is no escape.

 

The whole thing just doesn't sit right with me personally.
