stand_down_Beat-150x78.pngColumnist Malcolm Hirst says ahead of the supporters’ meeting it’s time to “stand down Norman, stand down please…” Malcolm Hirst writes… I have been musing on the Ska protest movement of the 1980s of late with the fragmentation of society caused by Brexit. Once again we have seen neighbour pitted against neighbour rather than people […]

Whenever it is that Smurfthwaite finally goes, it will be interesting to see what is revealed about the shenanigans at Vale during his tenure. I suspect that it will make Bell’s biscuit tin episode seem like child’s play.

We all here rumours. Some will be true and no doubt some will not. But there is one thing worryingly for certain, they won’t all be untrue.

Like all contributors to these pages, I wouldn’t trust Smurfthwaite as far as I could throw him, but I suspect that the level of deception may even surprise an old cynic like myself.

Is too late to save Vale ? Not yet, but the last chance saloon is around the next corner.

Had Smurthwiate honestly wanted to "save" us and build a Club towards the Championship, then he would have done something about the treacherous slide we are currently in.

Absolutely no one with a brain would EVER believe anything that comes out of Smurthwiate's mouth, alcohol infected or not.

The man has not fulfilled his "promises."

There will always be a retort from Smurthwaite that attempts to "do down" the very fans that are the lifeblood of this Club, our Club.

There have been many, many listings on here of the things/words/promises/utterings/actions that Smurthwaite has executed and there can be NO way anyone will surely accept anything from him now, other than his sale of the Club.

The op mentions "pretence." Well let me state that Smurthwiate has pretended to be a Chairman/Owner/ Lover of Port Vale FC and he has failed totally in all 3 aspects.

I, for one will NEVER want this man in our Club after the way he has allowed us to drop towards the abyss. Can the sad few that are prepared to carry on bowing to his so called stature not see it in themselves to understand that Smurthwaite is the grim reaper and is doing nowt to either save the Club or give fans ANY kind of optimism for our future?

We are all entitled to our own opinions but it saddens me greatly to see that apathy will probably rule again and Smurthwaite probably recognises that Valiants are powerless and only huff and puff without any end result?

I acknowledge that I am one of the die-hards who has attended home and away matches for years and perhaps I am guilty too of non action. But, what can I do as an individual when I sit amongst supporters who shout but then argue with you when you raise any discussion on how poor the Club is run, who is responsible etc, etc?

As a realist I believe Vale will survive this season(somehow) but until Smurthwaite, the cancer of Port Vale is removed then we will have more of the same next season. How will it change when the power that be is stubborn and sitting in his ivory tower doing sweet fanny adams about correcting HIS mistakes ?

End of rant....although I know deep down there are 3 to 4,000 ardent Valiants out there who think exactly the same as me.
