The story [in a nutshell] that was published in the 60s [?] concerned a man who lost his entire family in a very short space of time and spent the rest of his time sitting in a room laughing.

 

I lived and worked in blackpool for a while in my younger days... sold rock on the front, worked in the tower, winter gardens, palatine hotel [pub] and pleasure beach... it was a ****hole then it hasnt changed much except in the deterioration

 

IMHO a chance was missed to revitalize Blackpool a few years ago when there was talk about a huge Vegas style casino being built in the North West/Midlands, I believe Manchester was chosen but nothing came of it.

 

These mega hotels /casonos in Vegas and other areas of the USA/world are much more than just casinos but are luxurious resort complexes featuring all sorts of clean entertainment, acivities and dining and host all types of sporting events from darts to boxing.

 

Locally, coach trips are run to the casinos in Connecticut for the older guys and gals and they have a great time, people go there not just to gamble but to enjoy the activities on offer, stroll around and make friends, something diifferent from the daily routine.

When I stayed in Vegas some years back I was struck by how cheap a lot of things were..from food to hotel rooms even in the Luxor where we stayed. It really did attract your ordinary Joe and was all the better for it.it was run down and rough as hell in places but just full of great people.
