Doug Loft appreciation thread.

How good is he currently and how good is he capable of getting?

 

I'm sure many of us have said in the past how much we miss a goalscoring midfielder. We've never really had one since the days of Micky Cummins and Bridge Wilkinson.

 

In my opinion, Doug Loft is the best all round midfielder at the club and is the best we've had for a good while.

 

He's got a great engine and fantastic fitness, never stops running for 90 minutes where others seem to be tiring. He's quick both with the ball at his feet and without. Good work rate and he doesnt mind mucking in and doing the dirty work and tracking back when we are under pressure. Good cross on him, set pieces look dangerous. Not scared of using both feet and now he's started to add a few goals to his game.

 

We've not seen the best of him in the previous seasons due to injuries. At the start of last season just as he was settling into the side, he suffered 2 broken ribs and a collapsed lung. When he returned and we had a dip in form around christmas time, Lofty was one of the stand out performers. Then he suffered with another injury that kept him out of the side until February time and we missing him massively.

 

I know its only 3 games into the new season, but so far he's been a different class. Keep him fit and on form like he is at the moment and surely we have got one of if not the best midfielder in the League?

 

People have said similar about Gary Roberts in the past, imagine if we can get them both on top of their game.

 

I'll put money on him now being named as our Fans or Players player of the season.

People said that about Roberts. If Loft remains consistent there's no doubt he is an asset. He's one of the few truly versatile players we have. Micky can play him in defensive midfield, attacking midfield or as a winger and know he will still be a star performer. It's when players start banging in 10 goals from midfield before Christmas that higher placed clubs start to notice them, so stick to the assists from now on Lofty. :D

As for this 'best player in the league' phrase people often mention, I bet the best players at every club are heralded as the best overall by their own fans.

Let us not forget just how good Roberts is and can be. The pair of these on song and we'll dominate any team in this league. Loft looking good, but Roberts is the one who can really dominate a game with his vision and passing.

Lofty must have an iron lung. I've never seen someone of that stature have so much energy.

 

He mustn't be able to walk after a match day.

 

He also seems to mix skillfull with a strong tackle this season - rare in this league.

lofty has always been quality , i am shocked that some seem surprised at how well he played last night . the only down side with regards to lofty is that he is unlucky with injuries , lets hope it doesn't strike him down again this season.

Fitness is key to Loft, this is really his first preseason at Vale when he hasn't had a knock.

Always maintained he's a very good player. Has been very unlucky with injuries but hopefully he is over them now.

 

Last night's performance was no surprise to me, class player.

He sounded like he was everywhere last night. I have said numerous times that our best midfield partnership is loft and Roberts (if we play two in the middle). If he played for Crewe their fans would be valuing him at a million!

Loft is head and shoulders above Gary Roberts, he has a much more all round game. If he keeps on improving he won't be at the club for too long unless we get out of this league.

If he does have a cracking season the horrid fact is that he will be gone at the end of the season, what's even worse we will probably sell him for about 100k
