Organ donation

I am very pleased to see the law is to be changed in Wales so that people have to opt OUT of donatimg organs in the event of their death, as opposed to hospitals only being able to use organs from those who opt IN.

This is long overdue and needs extending to the rest of the UK, which lags behind the rest of Europe and sees many people dying each year because they cannot be helped.

In the meantime, organs needed should be allocated to those who have donated themselves first. I do appreciate a small number of people cannot donate for medical reasons rather than their own choice, and they should not be discriminated against.

I was also surprised to see some people interviewed on the news say they would donate all their organs 'except their eyes' or 'except their skin and bones' - how bizarre !

How would they know if people had opted out?

I have to carry cards because of some of the medication I take, do I trust someone to look at them in the circumstances, no. I have to stop taking one tablet 3 days before a dental procedure but dentists dont ask all that often.

Dont get me wrong, Im in favour of people opting out not in, I just dont trust the administration, and no one should be discriminated against. If people dont want to donate its their choice.

Admin errors can occur in all walks of life - its not a strong argument any more than saying they might get your blood type wrong because of an admin error when you're in surgery. Better admin would be crucial, I agree - but I don't think anyone has the right to opt out and still expect an organ if they need one from someone else when they are alive.

Refusing a donation because you are not a dona is a very greasy pole, do you also refuse because of religion/colour/sex etc?

The need should be assessed on a medical basis only and people opting out should not be marginalised because of their choice... and it is their choice no matter how irrational that choice may seem to others.

As far as I'm concerned they can have anything of mine..but my wife says she'd want me left alone and intact so I would probably opt out to avoid her having to go thru any further pain at what would be a hard enough time for her. If I survive her they can have the lot.

I think everyone should make their wishes clear to their loved ones/next of kin to make things as easy as possible when the time comes....f you want to opt out..get it sorted so that they know
