It's interesting that the level of outrage when someone uses 'Frog' or 'Kraut' is fairly minimal compared to the worst words that were much more common in the past like the n@@@@@ word, or the word used by racists for someone from Pakistan, but nobody objects shortening British to Brit.

I'm not sure Yank can be truly racist as the USA is made up of people from other countries, often only a couple of generations ago when they went there.

 

Because it's all about the motive behind the use of the term. If it's meant in a racist way then it's racist. if it isn't it's just..well..stupid maybe.

Swept under the Carpet by the OVF hierachy ?

 

I object to that comment and as you've raised this in the public forum please allow me the chance to reply in the public forum.

 

First off, the moderators are volunteers, we do not moderate ALL posts, we do not have the time. Therefore if a matter has not received an immediate reaction from the OVF team it could be because we have other aspects of our life to get on with.

 

Secondly, we post-moderate. That means posts are posted and then we will take action if we are alerted to them. We don't pre-moderate which means checking every post before it is posted as it is impractical. Therefore, with post-moderation we absolutely reply on something being reported to us for us to take action.

 

Therefore if something serious needs reporting and if you don't report it properly how can you criticise the team for not responding?

 

We have a clear disclaimer on the front page, a rules section in the forum and a Contact Us page which all give very clear, specific instructions on how to contact us and to be patient waiting for a reply. It is as simple as emailing [email protected] so that the next available Admin person can pick it up.

 

Therefore to suggest something is "swept under the carpet" is both inaccurate and insulting.

 

For the record, I have not received any complaint about personal abuse from users complaining that another user has called them a "racist" without good meaning.

 

IF we did I am sure we would try to mediate and ensure this matter was resolved by apology if neccessary but in private, via PM and email and not on the public forum.
