I believe John Rudge is a genius but his greatest strength in wheeling and dealing with players is an era long since passed. The Bosman ruling ruined this for clubs like Vale. Since then managers at the club have taken the annual free transfer gamble on bringing in whoever is knocking about for free. Foyle killed off the club in league 1 to be honest by bringing in Tudor and Rocastle, 2 big (relative) signings that were mega flops. Bratt then decided no more money would be spent on the club and decided to be as tight as possible by running the club on a shoestring thinking spending money made no difference and Adams would save him by unearthing some cheapo gems. Which in fairness he didn't, but he has this season.

Whilst I agree that Rudgie was fantastic in the transfer marker, to state that this was his greatest strength is selling the great man a little short. A shrewd tactician, a great motivator, a firm belief in how football should be played and a genuinely decent human being, to label him a wheeler dealer seems a little unfair.

I do agree that the changes in the game did catch up with him though. The (enforced) transfers of Mills and Ainsworth and his difficulty in procuring adequate replacements (Peter Beadle!?) due to changes in the transfer market seemed to signal the end of his midas touch, unfortunately. Will always love the man though.

To bring back the greatest manager this club has ever had would potentially soil the memories of those amazing days. Highly unlikely any

way except perhaps as an ambassador for the club or non executive president role. I understand what the Sproson family have done for this club and they deserve that statue but I am amazed there is no statue of the great man. Major disappointment on that front.
