  1. Really enjoyed that one. Doesn’t matter how long these run for as long as it’s interesting content.

The preseason rant was bang on the money about what we did and also the fitness of some players. We’ve signed players who weren’t ready to start the season, which is outrageous and that’s not good enough on our part. We've been far from perfect this pre-season, you’ve got fans trotting out the cheesy “trust the process” line to anyone that dares raise questions (very cult-like as Andy said). We’ve had staff going on about being championship ready and we weren’t even league one ready. Let’s hope players get up to speed quickly and I agree that this window is massive, but I think we’re desperate right now for goal scoring options.

  2. Some very good points made in that chat on the latest news. Quite well balanced. I did think that might have been a bit of a safe and boring guest, actually turned out to be an interesting chat with Dan. Good stuff throughout.

  3. Really enjoyed that pod. It’s alway good to look back at previous predictions and comments and see what became of them. The best of the bunch have to be the early comments about Wilson and Garrity. Always good to be proved wrong in a positive way though. I agree with Bez about the 3 out of contract players, I think that Benning could be the one not to sign, purely because of him being out of the squad for so long. I know he had a good last couple of games, but would that be enough to guarantee him starting next season? At his age he should be playing regularly.

6 out 10 for smithy was generous. Bloke cost us the first goal.

Bit of a combination for that. Smiths terrible control and touch to concede the corner. Gibbo loses Mckirdey for a second and Wilson isn’t the man you want putting his head on the line on the front post either. I thought 5 for gibbo was harsh tbh, but then again probably a 6, one of our only outlets who kept going for us and was keeping their wing back in their half more than he was in ours I felt. Worrall was probably more a 4 too, really poor again. Garrity was ineffective in his role as well.

  6. Enjoyed listening. Worralls quality dipped second half for me too. I think you’re right that Clarkes changes after Hall went off killed the link up play between Worrall and gibbo, as Salford had struggled to get to grips with them. But once we swapped we lost that momentum they’d built up.

You’re also not the first fans to mention crosses into the box, they’re pointless when we don’t have strikers who are good enough in the air and if you hadn’t noticed we haven’t really played like that all season. And that’s Husseys game, putting crosses in.  So why has Clarke changed our approach play around the box? Because it hasn’t worked this last couple of games.

  7. Good episode again, that initial bit on the turnstile issues should be sent to the club.

I didn’t think the Benning sub was necessary (other than resting gibbo for Swindon), because I felt that he came on and was worse defensively and was at fault for 2 goals. Him  not doing his job in being the covering player (2nd goal) is something he’s let us down with before, was it Rochdale?

Martin seems to be a bit of a scapegoat based on his past performances, but watching that first goal back and he does check his run to step out to their lad running with the ball, but it’s Cass who then also comes out as well and that frees up the lad wide to score. He should have stayed.

    Newport Review!

Bezza is back from his Radio Stoke gig and has graciously found time to fit us in to review the game! A tough afternoon against a good side who will be up there at the end of the season. Were there any positives to take? Was it a red? We answer as much as we can!

Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com

Did burgess get picked out for both goals? It looks like Pett who they play a 1-2 around on this footage for the first goal:

Jones looks to get they deciding touch as well. The second goal is equally as bad though, Burgess gives their lad way too much room.

There’s a good view of the red card incident as well.

  9. Enjoyed that one and even though he’s a Burton fan he’s still knowledgable about our team through his podcast.

Not sure Bez got the right end of the stick with Yates stoke comments about smith and gibbo. I thought he meant they’d be good enough for that level. I’m not sure it’s going to be as easy as waving a new contract under their noses though to get to sign with us. I think they’ll wait it out.

Possibly not but I've spoken to him at Swindon and Crawley , didn't know at Swindon that it was his dad . Seems genuine bloke to me , can only take him at face value.

Whereas Sproson has ulterior motives. Wasn't Toby Edser the best thing since sliced bread according to Sproson too ?

Absolutely I get what you’re saying. But his dad you would this imagine would  be more guarded about making comments to fans if his lad was unhappy. Sproson on the other hand should keep that stuff to himself instead of announcing it on the radio, because he should know that it could harm his career here.

I thought that was one of Gibbo's worst performances for a long while. But he was one of the better ones, tells you something. Who else deserves above a 0? Cov, Smithy, Garrity and Amoo at a push. And maybe, just maybe, Rodders is worth a 1. At least we looked better (not hard) with him up top.

No doubt it was. But it’s an impossible task when on the face of it only one player was looking to drive at the opposition, attempt any semblance of link up play or energy to get us going or to get at that them. Whilst every player was making mistakes the worst thing about the game was players looking like they were constantly on the back foot, like they were reacting to everything second best, not even attempting to get on the ball, not making the movements we’ve been used to this season or just waiting for someone else to do something. Hiding probably sums up some players performances actually. I’m in the Lorne st so seeing gibbos game close up on that side all night for a change made it (to me) more visible about what he was trying to do to drive the team. It didn’t always come off for him, but I think he tried to make it work which is more than I can say for most and we need everyone firing not just one trying to. Smith was in the same boat for me too but he’s a centre half and can’t have the same impact on a game. I’ll listen to the pod on the way to work later but it’ll be interesting to see if just those 2 get picked out as the only ones at least trying to make something happen. They should do for my money.

Absolutely no one should be above a 4 maybe smith a 5 perhaps , who voted gibbo motm btw ????

Easily man of the match. Defended well one on one and at least he was showing passion and desire to try and make things happen for us down the right with his movement, link up play and runs. Granted not everything was coming off for him and he didn’t always get the ball back when he’d made a run, but you can’t fault what he was trying do. We can’t rely on one player trying to drag us through games because no one else was stepping up and showing the desire in wearing in the shirt, and that’s the first time I’ve thought that this season.

    Oldham Review/Walsall Preview

Dreadful defending the theme as we lose to 2nd bottom Oldham with a performance that was not consistent with the rest of the season. Jonny and Stu go through the game, work out which players can come out with any credit and how we go forward from here. We also quickly preview the Walsall game on Tuesday with the Saddlers fans fired up for once to come to Vale Park!

Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com

Can’t argue with a lot of the player ratings. I can’t see a couple of those lads surviving for the Walsall game. Namely Martin and Rodney.

For my sins I watched the extended highlights on the EFL site this morning. Gibbos spell in the second half makes me think that he plays like any of us would play like if we ever got the shirt, basically running through a brick wall for the team. The goals against are a horror show that were preventable.

You mentioned Gibbos contract, I’m not sure what anyone else thinks but can it really be resolved in January because I’m sure other clubs will be watching him currently. Which also ties in with Bezs fears that he’s previously voiced about Conlon come January too.

  14. All a fair assessment, I agree on the players that stood out for us. I still don’t know where this theory has come from that gibbo has cost us goals with misplaced passes, i get that like any player he gives the ball away now and again, but I just can’t think of any right now where it’s cost us goals. I really can’t. The lack of movement up front was very noticeable and that’s why I was surprised that Clarke didn’t change formation because Bradford did what barrow were doing to us until we changed formation, just to allow players like Worrall, Amoo, gibbo and Conlon more space. Also if we have players like Rodney and Lloyd up front then for me I think we have to try and turn their defence around more to try and get them in behind.

    Mansfield Review!

A point gained on the road rather than 2 lost as a fantastic following at Field Mill see Vale have an off-form evening at Mansfield. We talk through the positives - Tom Pett, Covolan penalty save and a superb free-kick from Tom Conlon. And cover the not-so-goods as well. Apologies for the sound quality, normal service will resume on Friday!

Just to jump on to your upcoming conversation about how teams have singled out players. I disagree with jonnys point about the 3 being Worrall, Garrity and Conlon. It’s not happened too often where we’ve been stopped but I think if you look at the last few games then Garritys drop in form coincides with the injury he picked up. I don’t think he’s been the same since then.

But have a look back at a few of our goals, if memory serves me correctly I think the main fulcrum of our attacking play with wingbacks has been wingback into forward, forward back to Conlon, Conlon out to wingback who’s made a run behind their fullback, wingback cuts it back for a chance. Garrity arriving in the box relys on the wingback getting wide to pull it back but he hasn’t been making those runs, but we’ve seen proctor and politic offer that instead.  So for me the players that have been stopped recently (but actually not that often) have been Worrall, Gibbo, Conlon, proctor and Wilson and the link up play they offer to create chances. The barrow first half was a perfect example of this, we had nothing to offer once the wingbacks had their space denied when barrow doubled up on them and they also screened off the ball into out forwards feet too.

I also had Rodney down as the other main name out the door if things went well. I hope he comes back strong from his recent absence. He really is a quality player that can destroy teams when he's on it.

Agree on Rodney, but only if he can start to show his form from last season, but I don’t think he has yet. So right now out of our “assets” I think it’s Gibbo and Conlon who will be attracting interest. I also think that Worrall may have one last move in him if he carries on his form too, I’m sure some clubs would take a punt on him for a couple of years.

  17. Is it wrong to say I enjoy the pod more when we lose? Not sure I agree with knocking individual performances down because of the team performance though.

There were some good performances within the game I thought, and at times proctor, Pett and Gibbo were way ahead of everyone.

Pett had a decent game, but I thought it was him that was slow to close the thrower for the 3rd goal, a small lapse that ended up being costly. I agree that I don’t think there’s any blame that can be attached to Worrall for not winning the header, but when everyone is getting back into their shape it’s hard to suddenly be swapping around so that someone else marks worralls man when he’s coming in defend the back post.

One thing I noticed with Jones and gibbo was that they were mainly being targeted on that side with long diagonals on to Jones head. I think jones stood up to it well and in the main  I felt that they both linked together well to defend their back post / corner of the box from those long balls in.

It’s an interesting comment you make about that bit if play from Gibbo where he headed it past the full back and ran on it. You don’t often see play like that in our league, let alone from a full back. I think him and Conlon are currently the 2 main players for us that could be being scouted elsewhere. Conlon may not have been at his best, but you can still tell that’s most of our play goes through him. Take the second goal as an example, that must have been a training ground routine with Conlon being at the heart of it.

  18. Enjoyed the latest pod again. As I said in another thread the 3 key changes that Clarke has made this last 4 games with Cass, Smith and Gibbo have made us a much better team. I agree with bezzas points about Worrall and Gibbo, there aren’t many better wingbacks in the league than those 2. But in regards to Johnny’s points about their goals, one of the sacrifices of wingbacks is that space behind them, which means you need the right and left sided centre halves to come across at times to cover and I thought Jones was really unlucky for their first goal. On another day it goes for a corner or he blocks it. Also the second, even though Gibbo has gone to make a run and Conlon has made a mistake with the pass to him, it’s still going to take a great strike or a slice of luck to score from that distance and I think they got that luck with a bit of a deflection on its way too.
