  1. It’s good to get an extra voice on there, didn’t he say he’d been to Arsenal with his kids and father in law whos a fan of them? His knowledge of the Vale and the squad seemed fine to me though so I didn’t mind him at all. I must admit to missing the Man U reference though.

I think the one comment within that podcast that hit home was that this squad has been shaped around Pope, that is so true and we’ve struggled to find another way of playing without him and indeed a replacement for him.

  2. Players knocking on a managers door wondering why they aren’t playing isn’t unrest, that’s part and parcel of professional football. If someone else isn’t playing well or a player believes he should be getting a chance then it’s normal for them to be knocking on the managers door.

I’ve heard very credible stories from first hand sources of Mckirdys conduct during training, including getting into a spat with the manager on the training ground.

  3. The comment about disruptive players was an interesting tidbit of “inside information”. That needs to be quashed as soon as possible. The obvious suspects would be those who have been binned out of the squad entirely.

  4. If nothing else losing certainly leads to more entertainment value in the podcast.

After watching that last night I’m erring more on the side of him going sooner rather than later. There are no excuses for our change in style, performance and work rate from what we saw last season. None whatsoever. You can’t tell me that missing Pope, Legge, Gibbo, Amoo and Joyce is the reason for it. Those lads coming in to their places should be up for it and be able to slot in seamlessly and show the same effort, quality and desire that we were used to under Askey.

  5. Losing certainly makes for a more spicy podcast and it provided a highly charged debate on Askeys future too. I don’t think we should be changing manager just yet, I agree that he’s earned the time to put it right. But with so much disruption with players injured or suddenly having to isolate it isn’t helping team continuity either. Having to change manager would be a huge decision for our owners to take, especially given their own inexperience. I’d give him til January personally.

I’m tempted to side with Stu on those late winners, it’s not down to players not being bothered, it’s about switching off for a split second and being punished. Whoever was marking Ellison at the corner did it yesterday, the balls gone past them and they’ve switched off and have no idea where Ellison has gone. Yes he got a lucky ricochet but we’ve not been alive to it. You could maybe argue that a factor in the Tranmere and Newport late goals is that we’ve worked so hard with a man down for the last 30 mins that we were physically and mentally tired and just succumbed to all the pressure from the opposition.

I think it was Stu who touched on Clark’s performances, IMO his work rate has been way down on what it should be as a fullback. He isn’t adding enough energy and drive, and I don’t mean the odd 40 yard aimless cross field run on his own where he loses the ball or ends up out of position. I’m talking about providing the support and impetus for us by coming from deep areas where we pin opposition fullbacks in and we’re seeing our fullbacks get around our winger or make runs inside. We aren’t seeing it enough and I’m going to guess that his overall runs and statistics aren’t up at the levels they should be. Not only that I think defensively he has had some problems positionally or with wingers that have seen the opposition create chances or even score. He hasn’t hit the levels we know he can IMO.

It’s a pity Monty got moved yesterday with Conlon going off, which was possibly much more disruptive a change than it should have been. I can understand him not playing Mckirdy on the wing with Monty because I’m convinced that Worrall is there to help Monty out defensively. But I think just a straight swap with Mckirdy going as a ten and having Burgess and Manny be more disciplined defensively may have worked.

  6. Good to get another more neutral viewpoint on in that Scunthorpe podcast to mix things up a bit. I think Johnny’s ratings were pretty bang on. One thing that maybe was a bit understated was how well Legge and Brown did for their chance that hit the post, I know that Brown got lucky with the rebound but he’s narrowed the angle enough to give their lad not a lot to aim at. Legge has seen that their lad is free at the back post, if you watch it you seen him have a glance around as he’s backtracking, he’s then forced their forward to shoot instead of passing it and has made sure he’s kept him as wide as he possibly can in that situation. One thing of note in there is that Clark is absolutely miles out of position which has left their winger free at the back. So I thought that was good defensive work from Brown and Legge.

  7. @stupersjust listened through your chat with Gabriel Sutton online and your comments on Gibbo giving away possession jumped out at me, because you talked about the same stuff with yatesy. But as for that costing us goals I could only think of the Forest Green game at home where he miscontrolled it on the edge of the box and the ball ran away from him for their lad to score. I was struggling to think of other instances.

  8. The recent Manny debate between Bez and Jonny was spot on. There’s no point saying he’s the best midfielder when we can’t get enough games out of him, we can’t build a team around someone like that.

The second part of the Adam Yates interview I thought was very revealing and there were a lot of points that I found interesting.....

We all knew the Bruno experiment was Smurfs doing and he confirms that players were signed on the basis of highlight reels that can make anyone look good. David Kelly coming in and disrupting the dressing room was a detail that he thought didn’t help Brown and I wonder what he did that was so disruptive? Laurie Wilson going vegan and it changing him as a player. His comments about the local lads in the team were spot on for me, none of this knee jerk reaction and over the top comments we see after a game, just matter of fact observations that give an insight into how those players are regarded. In fact I’d apply that to every player he discussed, talking about what each player brought to the club and their strengths and weaknesses, in particular the Dodds discussion too. In a way that and his comments about being on the radio show the level of detail and understanding of players roles that some fans just don’t seem to be able to grasp. I liked his comments about the boo boys too and his desire to keep his place.

I hope you can get more ex players on.

  9. Really enjoyed that. You let him do most of the talking and the stories all flowed together nicely. Interesting where he discussed the academy and mentioned wanting to get in coaches who had played and knew what it takes to win games off football. That’s a wise move IMO.

  10. Another one.....

You know what roles players are expected to do in a game, you know what goes on behind the scenes with game preparation and what is expected of a player (both with and without the ball). So when you’re sitting next to a fellow commentator and they come out with some utter drivel, is it hard to suppress the urge to put them right and tell them why a player has just done what they did or indeed what you think the player should have done?

We are interviewing Adam Yates tomorrow! Is there anything that anyone would like asking? We'll do our best!

How far does he think our local players (Conlon, gibbo and Smith) can go in the game?

Does he think that local players are given more of a rough ride by fans when compared to players bought in from outside?

Does he think the modern day role of a full back is different  in any way to when he came through?

Is it difficult to be critical of players during a commentary when he is still around the club?

  12. I liked the spikiness of Johnny (I think) when you were discussing points accrued by ten games. Maybe it was the early morning start? But it added a bit more to the debate.

I think you got the teams spot on with what we have, Monty whilst not the best full back in the world is better when he pushes on and supports the play. So him and Clarke should be nailed on as fullbacks if they can get their attacking game going. Whitehead has had 2 bad games in a row and couldn’t complain if he lost his place.

  13. Enjoyed that one this week (no offence Stu)  because it just shows how we all see games differently. I thought that whilst we did have a few half chances that we scuffed at, I don’t think we’re anywhere near our levels of last season in terms of attacking play, and that the boys went a bit over the top in their praise for our attacking play at Cambridge. I don’t think we’re getting behind teams, forcing mistakes from sides in dangerous areas, getting good crosses into the box, seeing players breaking the lines at the opposition defence or even getting players into good positions in the box through our own play.

I also think some of the ratings were a bit generous and that leads me into our support play and general attacking play too. One of the things that Askey spoke about last season was they were working on ways to get players into good positions in the box, we did that with little triangles of play down both wings that either ended up with a winger, full back or a Burgess or Taylor breaking into the box or making a good angle for a ball in to a forward. You’ve only got to look back at highlights of games last season to see the amount of chances we created and goals we scored by playing this way. This season the only game we’ve played like that was at Wigan. In the rest of the games we just haven’t seen it. Which leads me to the ratings of players in those areas that should be offering more of a threat in how we attack. On the left we had Fitzpatrick, Monty and Conlon, I don’t recall once seeing those 3 link up to work an opportunity. When we did I felt it was down to Montys individual endeavours more than team play. But he totally faded out of the game in the second half. Fitzpatrick as steady as he was (he did well defensively) just doesn’t break past his winger to offer anything different. On the right we all know Clark is a good player, but I think he got found out a bit at times defensively, but apart from a couple of individuals runs where he lost the ball he and Worrall played like strangers, he didn’t make a run around him or make a run on the inside to work an opportunity and I don’t think he offered much at all in the way of an attacking threat as a combination with Worrall. Second half our link up play and any threat down the right was non existent. Maybe part of that problem is Worrall being out of form? We also didn’t see Whitehead or Joyce get involved with them either which would free up a winger or fullback to make that run.

To me we are nowhere near the levels we were last season when we  had Monty, Clark, Gibbo, Worrall and Amoo as key players in our attacking play. We don’t seem to be firing at all in that regard or playing like they know what each to other is going to do. Like I said, watch highlights of last season and you can see what I’m talking about and what we are lacking going forward.

Maybe I’m being too harsh and it may take a few games for us to get going? Maybe having no Taylor is a bigger miss to our squad? Maybe it’s showing that we can’t afford for key players like Worrall to have a dip in form.

  14. I thought you were all a bit more restrained than I expected in your criticism of the game (apart from the 3 for Theo). The formation was madness on reflection and some of the individual performances were terrible, especially in that second half where we should have been pushing to win or get ourselves back in the game. Maybe the lack of home crowd is a factor?

I agree with you. I think we've softened a bit on Wozza. He played great 1st game, decent 2nd game and had 2 poor games since. But like most players, he needs good passes in to him at the right positions. There's no use giving him the ball 40 yards out on the right and asking him to do something. He's not that type of player. Make sure he's in a good position, get the ball in to him so he can make that yard of space he needs to whip a ball in. Burgess has, for me been anonymous in the 2 games he's played. I just haven't really noticed he's playing and you can't carry someone like that. I think he'll be dropped for Saturday.

Tuesday is a big night for quite a few players to take their chance. I think it's an opportunity for players to show that they are ready to step up. Monty, in my opinion is the key to getting us going again. He's a big threat from the full-back position and can put pressure on the opposition from the left-back spot. I think the other things to work out are whether Woodhead can start, do we need more pace on the wing, and who starts up top in the middle. Could be an interesting game from that standpoint, I can't watch however as I'm at work!

Given that we’re playing pretty much Saturday Tuesday you could throw in an extra podcast on a Wednesday following the Tuesday game (time permitting of course). Just a quick half hour or less look at the game.

Also I know that the autopotdafwindscreen cup isn’t on your list of priorities but the poor performances of the last 2 weeks has potentially added something to be discussed afterward the wigan game to see how some players did. Whether you can fit that into the carlisle preview is another thing.

The review of the Morecambe is up!

A disappointing afternoon where dominated possession but did little with it. How do we solve the creativity issues we currently have? Was it a penalty? We try and cover it all.

Nothing like the raw emotion of commenting on a game straight after the final whistle. It adds some extra spice to the podcast. When the dust has settled on a game it would be interesting to hear if anyone’s views have softened or changed. I know you don’t normally pay too much attention to the autopaintwinsdcreeen trophy, but Tuesdays game is big for some players. If those that didn’t feature yesterday don’t look at Tuesday as a chance to shine and force their way in then theres something wrong with them.

  17. @stupers I think your discussion in the last podcast about playing gibbo today and then resting him Tuesday goes out of the window as we don’t have anyone else who can play right back. So it wouldn’t surprise me to see him feature again which can’t be ideal. Big chance as well for some players to make a positive impression in the Wigan game after some of the individual performances today.

Our Morecambe preview is out now!

We cover the latest out of the club. Carol's attempts to get fans back in, COVID at Vale and an ex-loanee making a surprising move. Then it's in to the Morecambe match, should be a tough match. What do you think?

Thought the Sproson criticism was a bit OTT fellas. We don't know what's gone on there, but I would be laying the blame at Forest's door. There would have been plenty of interest in Taylor in the summer, not least from us, but Forest pissed about with him. Clubs looked elsewhere and with the salary cap now in place, most will have used their allocated budget by this point. I suspect there were very few options left for him at this stage of the season, and Sproson has had to get him in where he can.

As a player tied to a championship club where lets be honest he would be very lucky to break into their squad then it’s Sproson a job to get him a decent loan move. I think he’s tried to get Jake Taylor to play the waiting game, rejecting us earlier this year and hoping to get a better club and it’s backfired on him.

  19. Another good episode. In light of some of the ratings for the defenders and the comments about replacing Fitzpatrick if CLark became available, would you guys be advocating Askey change any of those positions? Say Monty and Gibbo and coming back in as fullbacks for example? Or swapping one of the centre halfs even? (Although IMO Smith and Legge are a great pairing at this level).

  20. Enjoyed the latest episode again. On the subject of Maynard, its easy to blame the agent for him moving for more money, but that is his job after all - to get the player the best deal for him to have options. But whoever it was that said its Maynards decision on his future is bang on. If he really wanted to come and play for us then he would have done.

This one just shows how quickly things can change in football as the Browne segment very quickly became redundant, but it did show how well he had done for us in preseason.
