To be fair it was a good ball in from their lad too. But with 3 centre halves back you would think they’d have enough to deal with it.

They were both excellent balls into the box but that's because they had time to pick there spot. If we can't stop the cross coming in we should at least be making it a more difficult and rushed ball in by closing it down.

Defenders aren’t going to stop very ball in to the box, but for the first 2 goals I felt that Benning and Cass were all over the place positionally which allowed them the time to put a decent ball in.

Our preference is to do the pod Saturday. I think for the last few weeks however (and I think for this Saturday!) I don't think it's possible. We don't want anyone calming down too much, I was absolutely seething after the Rochdale game with the defending.

Benning, maybe we were a tad soft on him. However, someone could've closed the cross down, and Martin certainly should have done better challenging for the ball.

To be fair it was a good ball in from their lad too. But with 3 centre halves back you would think they’d have enough to deal with it.

  3. Being done the day after definitely takes the edge off it.

I actually think you were a little generous with Benning on the first goal. Yes he’s unlucky to slip, but I’m not sure he should have gone that far inside to press anyway, him going that far meant that it gave their fullback the full pitch to run into. Arguably we have 3 centre halves back anyway who should have dealt with the ball in, but I think Bennings decision was a bad one.

  4. Some of the comments on here are a bit precious.

Also a few fans on a forum having an argument  isn’t the definition of a <ovf censored> storm and vale fans need no excuse to turn on each other anyway.

Pope deserved to lose the captaincy when he got banned because of Twitter, that’s not the image the club wanted to be in the news. The decision to take it off him came from the very top is what I heard from more than one source back when it happened.

I have no issue with any player backing themselves, no one else is going to, being a footballer is about having a strong mental attitude and self belief. I agree with Pope on the issue of Bennett. We were weak as anything when he played up front, his hold up play and his willingness to put himself about was a liability. I felt that the ball was coming straight back with him in the side.

  5. I get the impression a lot of people have no idea how brutal football is behind the scenes in terms of how people are spoken about. It is ruthless . How Tom is talking here is exactly the kind of stuff that goes on in dressing rooms and on the training pitch between players. You have to be mentally strong to make it in the game to deal with everything that’s thrown at you from all angles, all sets of fans, your own teammates, your own management.

  6. Some good talking points on the latest review, in particular the wing back debate. I always remember Benning as a left back when he’s played against us, yet Johnny thought he wasn’t a full back. Bez was hinting at something else going on with Jake Taylor, from what I’ve seen he (along with Gibbo) are doing extra sessions to build up their fitness in addition to the regular training sessions with the rest of the squad. Looking forward to getting them both back to give us some different options.

  7. Enjoyed the return to proper episodes. Great to hear Jonno back to form knocking points off players for not getting the ball quickly enough for a free kick or for not having their hair style combed correctly or whatever it was that upset him over Conlon. I couldnt make my mind up what he meant about Wilson, wants him to do more running but then thinks he shouldnt do so much work outside the box. I also thought Smith was better than what jonno rated him, he was positionally than Johnson yesterday IMO, Johnson was too narrow when the ball went behind Jones, he needed to come wider quicker and that side was a bigger problem than down the worrall/smith side. Was smith knocked off points for something that wasn’t given as a foul when they scored?

I agree with the comment above about doing just key points of the game and I also liked you getting into the big talking points early doors like you did with worrall and Wilson.

The Worrall debate is a good one, I get that he isn’t as good a defender as Gibbo but I agree with @stupers that despite yesterdays performance he played well for us in that role last season. The problem with wingbacks is that if you put Gibbo there that you probably won’t get the same quality as worrall when he is higher up the pitch because he isn’t a natural winger. But he will add energy, drive and be better defensively. I think the only way in a wingback system to get worrall further forward is go 3-4-3, which then presents an issue of who does he choose for the 2 central midfield roles out of Conlon, pett and Walker. But I’m convinced that this seasons recruitment policy has been based on us playing wing backs and those will be a choice between worrall, Gibbo, Benning and Jones.

    Northampton Preview available!

We're joined by sponsor Tom (Home Choose Carpets!) to talk through the weeks news, with season ticket numbers, Carol and the SVA initiative on the menu. We do some side bets between ourselves on how we think Vale will do this season, offer our acca of the week before going into the Northampton preview. Plenty of churn at Sixfields since they were relegated from L1, will they get a quick bounce or can Vale get an early win, 17 years unbeaten on opening day!

The season has officially started now!

I think that’s fair. Certainly from my perspective, I really like Barton as a manager and he should right the ship quickly. I expect them to be a bit like Bolton, without the big early season disaster.

Taking Barton on is always going to be a gamble and it looks like it could have backfired already. The bloke can’t help but get into trouble.

  10. A good listen again. Always good when there’s another foil added in there, it mixes things up a bit. You mentioned being able to do an episode just on Pope being released..... you should try to get him on at some point in the future.

    Mansfield Review!

A shocking game and result from Vale to finish the season. Not many coming out of the game with much credit and not many helping themselves earning a contract! We run through the game, before running through what we think Vale do with each player out of contract, and you can join in too! Listen to the list, and then tell us on Twitter, Facebook or OVF what you would do with each player. Most correct predictions gets a free pint with us at Johny's when the season starts!

Congratulations on your first season. It’s been an enjoyable listen throughout. It got off to a bad start in that first episode when you had Bez talking in an outside toilet half a mile from a microphone, but it’s been essential listening for me over the season.

I think Jonny can look back with some embarrassment on the 1 he awarded to Conlon not too long ago, without the understanding of the new job the manager had asked him to do.  Describing him as dogshlt and did he also say he shouldn’t wear the shirt too? (I could be wrong on that final point).

But overall I’ve looked forward to listening in every week and the interviews thrown in every so often have mixed it up too.  Hope you keep it going next season.

I think we've been more positive today!

For that first 20 mins as I was watching the game I thought that it was very similar to last week at Carlisle in that our formation (mainly the wing backs) were getting overloaded at times and Bradford were playing in the space behind them. Clearly when worrall or Gibbo had the ball in the opposition half then the opposite wing back must have been told to push high, but when the ball broke down they hit that space theyd left behind them. But after their goal I felt the tide turned in our favour and both Worrall and Gibbo grew into the game a lot more. Both were defensively good and both were good on the ball. Any threat they'd posed in that first 20 was gone, so credit to both of them and in particular worrall who has shown his versatility by looking decent defensively.

I felt gibbos only difference to last week is that he didn’t fluff a clearance down the line which gifted them a cross in to the box, which suits your narrative of him being responsible for giving goals away through conceding possession  (I’m still not completely convinced by that claim) and I think that influenced Jonnys bad score for him. Equally up the other end of the pitch I thought that Robinson worked his balls off just as much as last week, held it up well again, was a handful for their centre halves and I thought his only difference to last week was that he got a well deserved goal.

I disagreed a touch with I think Bezs assessment of joyce, in that first 20 when Bradford were using the channels well, I felt that joyce was the one who should have been sitting deeper when the wing backs pushed on. But no doubt other that opening spell he had a great game.

I’m convinced though that next season we will line up with 4 at the back, I can’t shake the feeling that we only went 5 at the back to shore things up. There’s no denying either that wing back does not get the best out of Monty, worrall or Gibbo attacking wise.

One observation in this episode that’s stood out to me was the mention of robinsons workrate. I think that’s been evident across the whole team and we’ve gone back to that pressing game, with multiple players closing down and working hard for each other. But that workrate begins with the forwards, once they set the press and the tempo then I think that sets the whole team on the way. In fact I’d say that once we got back into the game I never thought we’d lose it.

    Another enjoyable episode anyway.

  13. Good listen again with the Carlisle review. Surprised to hear Monty get a 6 and only a 5 for Rodney Robinson and Gibbo and even smith scoring the same as Monty too with a 6.

Totally agree that first half our formation didn’t work and we couldn’t get going throughout the team. It looked like a new formation that we hadn’t had much time to work on. However I felt we looked much better second half when Monty went off and the formation was changed, in fact I thought our only threat was coming from Gibbo and Rodney in that second half, much more so than the combination of worrall and Amoo provided on the other side. If Gibbo was marked down for giving the ball away that lead to them getting a decent cross in first half then that’s harsh. Does that end up totally negating the couple of crosses he got in himself second half, the couple of half chances he created for us with those, the areas he found himself in at the back post and the fact he was part of a solid defensive display?

As for Rodney we also looked a lot weaker once he went off and that handed the initiative to them towards the end of the game as we had no strength or pace on the pitch. He looked the only player capable of beating a man today. His link up play with Gibbo in the second half was a lot better as well. I thought it looked a good combination at times.

Robinson a 5 too, I thought he had a decent game, ran the channels, held it up  well and maybe had our only shot on target too. Again him going off for Cullen weakened us and their centre halves had a much easier last part of the game.

I certainly struggle to see what Monty offered us or did today to score higher than those 3.

Smith scored the same as Monty as a 6, smith was solid defensively and even created himself a half decent chance too.

Some harsh marking IMO and maybe too much focus on what a player does wrong in a game rather than an equal focus on a the good things they offered too. To my way of thinking a 5 out of 10 is indicative of really bad individual performance of Mills-esque proportions with players offering very little, being out of position and generally looking out of their depth.

  14. Another good one. It wouldnt surprise me if the first names on the team sheet  were players with the mentality of a smith or a Legge, players who will give their all for the side.I think Clarke likes that side of the game. Jonny spoke some sense on Gibbo too, he’s going to take a few games to get going given his stop start season and the same applies for any of the players coming back in from injury. Loved the McCarthey interview too, great to relive those memories from a players perspective.

    And the Harrogate review!

Another 3 points for the Vale after a game of two halves in Harrogate! Vale deal with the conditions in the first half, before making them work for us in the 2nd! And another surprise goalscorer! We reach 50 points and feel suitably safe. Who'd have thought that a month ago?! Thanks to PV1973 from OVF for his ratings!

Thanks for asking me. I think you could make it a semi regular thing getting someone else’s viewpoint as a counter to Jonnys. We were surprisingly  close on a lot of them too. It’s a lot harder than you think when you’re watching a game and making a note of what players are doing and then trying to formulate a score from it at the end. Especially in a game that was your typical game of 2 halves with some very contrasting performances in each half.  I didn’t actually mark Brown down, I just thought that the saves he made were routine for a keeper of his quality. I was torn between a 7 or 8 for both him and Legge but ended up plumping for 7s for those two. I think manny was really the main difference, I felt he struggled to get in the game and he was sloppy with some simple passes, not the Manny we are used to. It was the right decision to take him off. I’ll also add that when Taylor came on I felt it was a case of men against boys and even though he ran round a lot he was getting bullied a bit.

Jesus Jonny’s a harsh bugger! 6 for Robinson?! Had a good game for me, easily a 7

Edit: Rodney too?! Bloody hell 😂

Shocking from Jonny. The more I listen to his scores the more I think he doesn’t properly understand what goes on in a game football and all the factors that go towards a players overall performance, both with and without the ball. I think I’m going to start to skipping that segment.

  17. The majority of it was good, but I tune out when people start coming out of the cliches of giving a zero rating and “he isn’t a professional footballer” comments.  Giving Conlon a zero and coming out stuff like he doesn’t care is just knee jerk over reacting fan attention seeking IMO. Then in the next breath say how well we have been doing as a defensive unit. That’s because Joyce and Conlon are being asked to do the side of the game that people like Jonny clearly don’t notice, the stuff off the ball that  protects our back 4 and denies the opposition space, breaking up play and keeping it simple, that’s part of the reason why in the majority of Clarke’s games we’ve looked better as a defensive unit. Then blaming him for the goal saying he should have put a foot out, the ball came at him waist high, not much he can do there. I’ve come to the conclusion that Jonny only notices what players do with the ball and going forward.

  18. The upshot of browns comments is that he’s telling the majority of the players in that dressing who’ve been recruited over the last 12 months or so that they aren’t good enough, (bar maybe a couple of exceptions). So whilst that might be an honest thing to say it’s not great for any kind of team unity that we need.

  19. Good podcast again. I thought hurst was industrious and needs to work on his end product. Clearly players like Conlon and Joyce were told to sit and play to a gameplan, which as a result will mean they don’t necessarily get on the ball as often. I thought 5 for Gibbo was harsh too, despite his positional mistake for the goal, a 5 indicates a performance of Mills proportions which it was nowhere near that bad. He made a hash of header that he recovered from and didn’t compound that by diving it to concede a peno. Other than that I thought he was fine and we look a lot better with him in. Worrall going off made us weaker out on the right because their left backs runs weren’t being tracked by worralls replacements. To criticise a player for looking tired after not playing a full 90 for 4 months is a tad harsh too. But it’s a game of opinions. Keep up the good work lads.

  20. Are you going to make Jonnys “scouting for the opposition” a regular feature 😀

To be fair, what Clarke was doing in training with the 11 v 11 is no different to what Askey was doing before, swapping players in and out of positions and looking at different options during the training game. It’s just that he did that and still stuck at 4-3-3 anyway.
