    And the Harrogate review!

Another 3 points for the Vale after a game of two halves in Harrogate! Vale deal with the conditions in the first half, before making them work for us in the 2nd! And another surprise goalscorer! We reach 50 points and feel suitably safe. Who'd have thought that a month ago?! Thanks to PV1973 from OVF for his ratings!

Thanks for asking me. I think you could make it a semi regular thing getting someone else’s viewpoint as a counter to Jonnys. We were surprisingly  close on a lot of them too. It’s a lot harder than you think when you’re watching a game and making a note of what players are doing and then trying to formulate a score from it at the end. Especially in a game that was your typical game of 2 halves with some very contrasting performances in each half.  I didn’t actually mark Brown down, I just thought that the saves he made were routine for a keeper of his quality. I was torn between a 7 or 8 for both him and Legge but ended up plumping for 7s for those two. I think manny was really the main difference, I felt he struggled to get in the game and he was sloppy with some simple passes, not the Manny we are used to. It was the right decision to take him off. I’ll also add that when Taylor came on I felt it was a case of men against boys and even though he ran round a lot he was getting bullied a bit.

Jesus Jonny’s a harsh bugger! 6 for Robinson?! Had a good game for me, easily a 7

Edit: Rodney too?! Bloody hell 😂

Shocking from Jonny. The more I listen to his scores the more I think he doesn’t properly understand what goes on in a game football and all the factors that go towards a players overall performance, both with and without the ball. I think I’m going to start to skipping that segment.

  3. The majority of it was good, but I tune out when people start coming out of the cliches of giving a zero rating and “he isn’t a professional footballer” comments.  Giving Conlon a zero and coming out stuff like he doesn’t care is just knee jerk over reacting fan attention seeking IMO. Then in the next breath say how well we have been doing as a defensive unit. That’s because Joyce and Conlon are being asked to do the side of the game that people like Jonny clearly don’t notice, the stuff off the ball that  protects our back 4 and denies the opposition space, breaking up play and keeping it simple, that’s part of the reason why in the majority of Clarke’s games we’ve looked better as a defensive unit. Then blaming him for the goal saying he should have put a foot out, the ball came at him waist high, not much he can do there. I’ve come to the conclusion that Jonny only notices what players do with the ball and going forward.

  4. The upshot of browns comments is that he’s telling the majority of the players in that dressing who’ve been recruited over the last 12 months or so that they aren’t good enough, (bar maybe a couple of exceptions). So whilst that might be an honest thing to say it’s not great for any kind of team unity that we need.

  5. Good podcast again. I thought hurst was industrious and needs to work on his end product. Clearly players like Conlon and Joyce were told to sit and play to a gameplan, which as a result will mean they don’t necessarily get on the ball as often. I thought 5 for Gibbo was harsh too, despite his positional mistake for the goal, a 5 indicates a performance of Mills proportions which it was nowhere near that bad. He made a hash of header that he recovered from and didn’t compound that by diving it to concede a peno. Other than that I thought he was fine and we look a lot better with him in. Worrall going off made us weaker out on the right because their left backs runs weren’t being tracked by worralls replacements. To criticise a player for looking tired after not playing a full 90 for 4 months is a tad harsh too. But it’s a game of opinions. Keep up the good work lads.

  6. Are you going to make Jonnys “scouting for the opposition” a regular feature 😀

To be fair, what Clarke was doing in training with the 11 v 11 is no different to what Askey was doing before, swapping players in and out of positions and looking at different options during the training game. It’s just that he did that and still stuck at 4-3-3 anyway.

I will give some credit to Vaughan (I thought I had!). But he's got way too much time. I went back to have a look at it during HT (and just now)and was disappointed with that. Maybe not that they stepped off him, but neither moved to close down. Sometimes good goals happen (Scunthorpe's goal at home for instance). I just didn't think that in this case, there was nothing we could have done better.

Bezza, was not happy when we recorded. That's why I put the swear warning on when I had to edit!

If you watch Vaughan before the ball comes in, I think what he did well was give Conlon a little cheeky shove to create the time and space for himself. That’s great play. A pity we don’t have clever players like that. He then makes Crookes look an idiot with his touch and movement. Just shows his inexperience vs Vaughan’s experience.

Are you doing a Flitcroft podcast?

  8. I think Stu that more credit should be given to Vaughan for that second. He did what every good striker is taught to do, he’s got himself some space by getting a hand on Conlon to get him off the him in the seconds before the ball comes in. No ones stepped off him, he’s made the space himself with his strength and anticipation. Then it’s a lovely little bit of skill to sent Crookes the other way before scoring. We need someone who can do that in our side.

Brilliant from Bez “if you’re having a co-commentator make sure they haven’t got <ovf censored> Tourette’s”. Right in the middle of his expletive ridden rant about their commentary 😀

Well, no manager emergency pod to do, so we're releasing our special sit-down with 'Boom Boom' John McCombe this week! We chat about life before Vale as well as time with Vale, a unique description he has for Popey's teeth, a story about his dog and Doddsy, and what he's up to nowadays!

Enjoyed that interview, it’s always good hearing from players within that squad. Brutal with the question that lead him to talk about breaking that lads leg, it must have been a terrible moment for him that day.

Once again, the failing of managers is blamed on the fans.

Maybe John Askey should have signed some good players. That would have been wise.

You’re obsessed with this blaming the fans comment.

The fans had no patience when a bad run came along.  That’s a fact. The same will happen with the next manager when they have a bad run. There’s no use pretending otherwise, that is unless you believe that if the next manager who goes on a run like Askeys he will (for some reason) be afforded  the time and patience of our fans?

  11. I’d like to see the Crowley brothers. But there’s no way any manager is going to get the time. Look at what happened with Aspin and Askey, even though they had initially achieved their short term targets, as soon  as a bad run comes around (which it will in any managerial reign) then the pitch forks and lit torches are out in force.

This wasn’t publicised by Manny was it? I’d heard he wanted it kept secret out of respect for his Mrs.

So someones just let something out in to the public domain that Manny didnt want out there. Sound.

The podcast didn’t leak the reason why Manny was off.

Yeah he was ok. I like my 6 now I've thought about it and I'm sticking to it! The scapegoat culture you speak of is a shame, I don't understand it. I try and give every player a blank slate before the start of every game, and judge them on the 90 mins they play. I'm looking forward to Gibbo being back soon (I see he isn't starting tonight), but the main thing Gibbo also needs to work on is his distribution. Monty and Gibbo back at full-back will be a welcome sight for me when it happens.

There have actually been some worse performers  than Mills IMO, smith tonight springs to mind. Gibbo lifted us in tenacity and tempo tonight but we shouldn’t be just relying on full backs to get the team going. But unfortunately that’s how we’re set up to play and without the Gibbo / Clark / Monty link up play I think we’ve struggled.

For Mills, I felt (and still feel) he had a decent game yesterday. He wasn't at fault for any of the goals, I can't really remember a dangerous attack coming down his side either. For a lad that got absolutely rinsed in the reverse fixture, he looked relatively solid. I don't think he's good enough to be starting regularly, and it's a shame he's been forced in to this because the abuse he's got when we haven't really got any other options is a bit wrong. Jonny giving him a 0 annoyed me, because it's just based on previous performances and a dislike for the player than anything else (although Jonny nudged up his mark on reflection as well). His ball retention wasn't great, but he was at least attempting to help going forward. I didn't think he got caught out of position yesterday.

I certainly wasn't advocating for Mills to start if Gibbo is fit. I like Gibbo, he's got great potential and if he's fit, it's a no-brainer to start him. He offers more, as you say going forward. The full backs have to be able to join the attack when the ball is coming down their side when you play 4-3-3, otherwise you lose a player. That's why for me (and certainly based on Fitzpatrick's performance yesterday) Monty and Gibbo are clearly our best two full-backs. But Mills was unfairly targeted yesterday in my opinion. He ain't good enough usually, but yesterday wasn't an example of that.

Anyway, I've had a fair old bit of stick for my comments on Mills. Some support too on social media so maybe some people thought he was decent as well. I was probably trying to even out Jonny's 0/10. I wasn't feeling great when we started the pod, tough week and watching that performance made it worse.

We do cover Gibbo on the preview, but found a couple of other issues to discuss as well. Good points from you, all well received!

FWIW I didn’t agree with Jonnys score of 0. I’m not sure where he pulled that one from, but at the same time he wasn’t as high as a 7 which would have put him on a par with Conlon. Maybe it was based on him giving the ball away occasionally, but show me a player who doesn’t do that.

I do believe that the full back areas haven’t been as productive as previous seasons in terms of assists and link up play, but I must add that I  didn’t like to see the abuse that was going Mills’ way on social media from fans as well. I think that’s uncalled for but it’s becoming the norm in this day and age. But it’s a also a sign of the discontent amongst fans and that scapegoat culture we seem to have here.

Keep up the good work mate.

  15. Another entertaining podcast. 7 for Mills ?? Have a word with yourself @stupers 🤣 The more I watch Mills play the more I notice he just seems to want to run forward at every opportunity. He has a tendency to make that gentle trot to the corner of the opposition box and seems to be out of position a lot as a result. He offers little variation in the type of runs that he makes and his crossing is usually coming from less dangerous areas I think. How many times have we seen him linking with our winger to get behind the opposition fullback or into the box to get himself or our winger into a much more dangerous position? This has been one of the missing factors for us all season - Link up play and that ball before the final ball that you often talk about.

There were 2 things that you didn’t mention in your review when Gibbo came on, (maybe you were too busy shedding a tear over Mills going off 😂 ). First of all we saw him link with Worrall and feed a great ball inside their left back to set Worrall free into their box to put a cross in. Secondly we saw a nice triangle of play between him, Worrall and Cullen and with a good bit of movement Gibbo got in behind and he dinked a cross to the back post. Granted nothing came of them in the end, but it was 2 passages of play that did something that not one of our other wingers or full backs managed to do all game - getting in behind the opposition and into the penalty box and causing them problems. In ten minutes he showed the different types of runs and options he offers when he links up with our winger. I don’t feel we’ve seen this all season from our fullbacks and wingers, last season that was a big asset to us and brought us goals and assists.

Im not saying he’s the messiah or the new Gavin Gunning (old OVF joke). I’m saying he offers us a better option in how we want to play in that 4-3-3 system going from back to front and link up play.  I’m actually not even sure we should risk Gibbo for the full 90 at Scunthorpe either, I think we should ease him into the team a bit more gently after his injury. Maybe that’s a debate for your podcast for the Scunthorpe game?

  16. Yesterday’s performance was probably the worst of the season and it’s hard to know where to start, if you’d didn’t laugh you’d cry and I think that’s how the podcast started off because yesterday’s performance was laughable. It was a good listen again. Well done.

Our Mansfield preview is now available!

Happy new year everyone! We talk through Carol's New Years statement and what we think it means. Then we have a chat about transfer targets for January and also the danger that we may lose a couple of players. Then into a Mansfield preview! They haven't won at home yet, and got a bounce from switching managers. Is this a winnable game, and what should we do with players returning?

I know you said that after carols statement that you should put aside the debate on the managers future. But there is no way after today’s performance that you can’t not have a discussion on his future. That was terrible.
