They get the first pick of the best talent though. It's like saying that Eton is the best school in England and makes huge profits so a school in Burslem should copy them

Except that I would never use Eton as an example of quality.

  2. Last year Man City pocketed £156M from selling young players, with just Foden a regular first teamer. from their Academy. Their Academy cost £200M 10 years ago, possibly the biggest in the world, but is now a nice little earner.  Another source of income for the Vale, if we can produce more youngsters than we can develop ourselves, and with the chance of a windfall,

He looked exactly what he is, a technically gifted young player with zero experience of mens football.

Which is why he is here, and expected to pick it up quickly. Maybe effective for half the remaining matches?

  4. Like who mate? Only player out injured who i feel can help us out is garrity & his goals. People going on about Clark, I’m sorry for me he isn’t the answer. The little he did play this season he was bang average. I’d be bringing the yak back in myself next game. I know he’s been poor but which defender hasn’t recently. At least he battles & is a fighter
The 11 that DM started with will not keep us up. His task is to find 4 or 5 other regular starters from the hand he has been given to give us a chance. New signings are needed, but fitness will always be an issue.

  5. Going off the last 26 games it’s a tough ask! The 3 games in hand certainly give us a glimmer of hope but as we all know you have to win them games in hand or they mean nothing. Worrying times
Our only hope is the contributions from players that were not playing yesterday. When they come back, can DM juggle and motivate a team into him becoming manager of the month for April. If that is the scale, it is a tough ask.

  6. How many years will it take to be Championship Ready? How many years for Pompey? It took the Owls 2 years with their money, and it doesn't look if they were ready. Concentrate on building an L1 team first, the facilities will grow in parallel, there will be time. Where does the money come from? Sustainability or windfalls? That is the question.

Imo obviously the cost to terminate the services of either individuals. Can’t see DM having players that aren’t picked by himself or his backroom team. At the moment DM has come to us following an unsuccessful time at Huddersfield, so he’ll want to be in charge of his own destiny. Where as, AC definitely wasn’t and was always going to be the one to go.

No one has mentioned the structure of the club changing, DM seems to be happy with the forward plans of the club and has agreed a 5 year contract. No mention of any changes to the  Recruitment Department of the club. Expanding the club according to the owner requires a DoF so I cant see that changing for a few years. A DoF when selecting a manager will expect that he will be able to establish a working relationship with him, as will a manager accepting a post at a club with a DoF? What happened elsewhere is in the past.

  8. FC I think three might have been a crowd but now that DM has come in and can manage and knows what the game is all about at higher levels than ourselves, it most definitely is a crowd. Also all the power was the owners and him, I think the power has now transferred to the owner and DM. Who would it be cheaper to get rid of, DoF or manager on a 5.5 yr contract with clauses and his back room team.?
What is this power that has transferred?

It would appear the plan fell apart late on deadline day. If there was a plan B it was too late to follow it.

We were probably on plan D in any case. If a  club decides not to lend /sell very late on the gamble fails. Playing safe does not get the quality or costs more. Hopefully next Jan we will be comfortable with all the essential business done in the Summer, al least we can always hope.

You can't compare the 2 clubs in any way.  Man U are sold out every single game with a season ticket waiting list of years (I know somebody who has been on the waiting list for 10 years plus).  Man U's ticket revenue is guaranteed every match, every season.  As a PVFC fan for over 40 years I want to see a successful side making progress moving up the table.  What I don't want is Championship Ready facilities with a team playing in L2.

Why are Man U considering spending £500M, Spurs spent £1000M on their grounds then? You have to move with the times. I am well aware our scale is different, we had to move from Hanley as the lease ran out.

Reading a number of the posts it seems clear that there is a logical, fundamental message to the owners.

    1.  Use the funds to get the best squad that delivers results in the best possible way.  This is called success on the pitch delivering progress, excitement, enjoyment, motivation and increased revenue through the gates.

    2.  Use excess funds to improve the infrastructure.  (Score board, toilets, pitch, offices, training ground) etc.

The two are very clearly linked together. Get No 1 right and revenue increases through success that enables the funds for No 2.  Get No 1 wrong whilst focussing on No 2 then you have what we have today.

Surely every football club owner understands this connection ?

Man Utd don't, their stadium requires replacement or re-building as it has been neglected for 20 years. All sides of the business have to be properly managed and kept in balance. Infrastructure brings in income as well as being within stadium regulations.

The success of a football club is ultimately determined by what happens on the pitch.  Everything else, not matter how admiral it is  is secondary.

But success depends how the club is funded and run.  Gate money and FA funding only takes you so far. It is the other money that makes the difference and how wisely it is spent.  Player sales can make a big difference in L1 either from the a First team or an Academy.  Currently it appears we do not have sufficient funds for adequate first team players.

  13. Is it commonplace for Directors at football clubs to become the manager?
It might be, but I can't think of one other than when Micky Adams became a fake director that time.
I am fairly sure that Barry Fry has stepped in from time to time at Posh. The point is that although a DoF, he has managed football teams in the past and in an emergency would be expected to steady the ship. Tin hat in place.
