I totally agree with both of you. Under Crosby it looked like the players really tried. Under dm the team has looked better at times but yesterday was shocking. it looked like Sunday league football. Let's hope dm gets the players working in training this week.

Big week for Moore, he now has his Owls coaching team around him, and will have some idea of how his players perform.  So a plan to beat Shrews is essential if the ship is to be turned around. Thinking of next season, is it easier to re-build in L2 or L1 ?

  2. Would be interesting to compare if we went without one. Pros and cons for both.
We need an effective recruitment system, who controls it, does not matter. Whether it changes every time the first team manager changes or whether it is coordinated with the academy/junior system is a matter of choice. Really depends on the size of the club and where the funding comes from. Vale are expecting the academy to supply far more players than previously, but it wiĺl take a few more years for that to happen.

  3. Correct.
Leicester away was a free hit for relegation battling QPR today. Guess who won. I guess their players didn't consider it a free hit.
QPR February form W3 D1 L1, including 2 away wins, thus in a run of form. More hopeful than Vale before the game? Leicester point lead dropped from 12 to 3 in 2 weeks, problems too.

The point I'm making though is how do you rank the teams in Division 3 N & S as above or below each other?🤔  So technically is it not 27th out of 66 in 1931(although there were 88 league clubs).  Whereas our 8th place finish in 1996/97 was 28/92.

Like I say it's splitting hairs in one sense as they were very different eras each with their own pros and cons(I don't think all the teams were pro. in the 30s as one example, maybe Division 1 but after that?).  It's also difficult to know what the strength of the Vale team was in the late 20s/early 30s compared to those of the 50s and 90s.

The Vale were in the 2nd Division so ranking of teams in the 3rd Divisions did not affect them. The point was the highest league position counting from the top. If 3 results had gone the other way Vale would have played in the highest league in the land. As for comparison of teams, the 30/31 team was my father`s favourite over the 54 side and of a higher standard. The 54 was my favourite, but obviously the 90s were a higher standard. Overall the type of football changes over the years, as does the relative wealth of clubs in the English Leagues.

Were there not only 3 divisions(or at least levels to the league system) in 1931 though and less 'league' clubs(2 third divisions that were the same level north and south)? I know it's splitting hairs and is historically our highest league finish but I always thinks it's difficult to compare the 2 eras(i.e1920s/30s to the 1990s) as there are a lot of variables.

1930/31 there were 4 Divisions, 1, 2 , 3S & 3N. 22 teams in each.  Vale finished 5th in Div2 , so the 27th team in the English League. Nowadays a team finishing 5th in the Championship would be ranked 25th.

  6. Just looked.

    We have the following

    Head of Physical Performance

    Head of Medical Performance

    First Team Head of Analysis

    Sports Scientist

    First Team Physiotherapist

    Sports Therapist

    First Team Analyst

    A Director of Football

No mention of a recruitment team

This does not include Manager, Assistant Manager and Football Coaches.

Wonder if too many cooks spoil the broth ?

Head of Recruitment Tommy Johnson still shown in the First Team ?

  7. Not quite convinced. This season was basically a repeat of last year. Crosby did well til Christmas and it crashed down, so did Clark. The real problems are a lack of investment.
The whole point of the January transfers. If your points targets are not safe, strengthen where you need to, either for promotion chances or to avoid relegation.

  8. Here comes the nonsense positivity! He’s not good enough I don’t even need to see any more games to tell me that. Clueless, Ryder wouldn’t of done any work with the senior players before he got the interim job it’s excuses again & again I’m sick of it. The crap the gaffer is coming out with is ridiculous
Isn't Ryder supposed to ensure that the youngsters integrate with the first team? Surely, he would have watched the first team and analysed their play as a coach.

The pitch is better now than ever, you should have seen it 30 years ago it had no grass on it. Look at Tottenham game. Don’t complain about it now it’s like a bowling green compared to then.

Climate change is resulting in warmer and wetter weather,  thus improved drainage was required. Irrigation to be improved and possibly a hybrid pitch later.

Pretty standard for a manager to privately say he'll be in a better position to work out the squad of players he is working with after a few games. Daft to think he'd had them figured out from watching old games on video or having a look in training.

But it's just Carol making retrospective targets again to justify failure. It doesn't matter in this instance, but it is the director of football achieving all of his retrospective targets that is the problem.

Didn't DM say give me 3 games, everyone will start from scratch or similar words? How many games did it take DC?

  11. OK here's my team we have to score we have to lift the moral around the place as it stinks.
        Ripley
    Plant Debrah Lopaco Icavetti
    Sang Garrity Chislett Mighten
            Wilson Loft
No point worrying about defending we have to win .
Take the players out who clearly do not want play because Crosby got sacked .
It's clear as day with some .
    Hopefully, Moore has seen it
Apparently, 3 games are sufficient for him to assess the players. But as usual, injuries will restrict his options. Were some players kept back to be fit for Tuesday?

Neil Harris reportedly going back to Millwall from Cambridge.

Don't think it will derail Cambridge enough to get dragged into it.

Maybe give us a better chance of 3 points at the end of April if still of consequence?

  13. Reading always play with four at the back so it's important we don't go with something stupid like one man up front.
I saw them away at Wigan and they've kicked on a lot since then but I didn't see anything that worried me in that game.
Andy Yiadom was excellent that said, and if we've got Connor Grant down that left side, then Grant's in for a busy  and stressful night

Seem to be using long throws in the last 3rd lately, I assume our analysts will pick up.
