You are totally right that it is bizarre that we have this technical style but two lumps up front.

I think the reason it is disjointed is that I don’t think there is joined up thinking on signings. Flitcroft definitely drives transfers, after all, we were after Loft pre Crosby and were told that he had been after him all summer.

Crosby if he had a big say would never have gone for loft with the style of football he wanted. My view is, I don’t think from what I can see that Crosby is doing actual management. I think he is basically a coach but everything coming out of the club to me suggests the big calls on personnel are made with Flitcroft driving the decision making .

Game management and motivation is Crosby`s prime function, his recruitment involvement will be defined in his job specification, which varies from club to club using DoFs.As far as I remember he did get involved in some player signings, possibly the loans

  2. This is also an aspect that worries me. If we were to have a manager/coach vacancy (hypothetically) do we then ignore an excellent coach/manager just because he would play a different style of play to the one preferred by the DoF.
We then have the possibility of having a lesser coach, worse results and all that entails
Deeper than that, it is the club style. A new DoF would employ the same style.

  3. Crewe managed to do that very well for years without a DoF. I am sure you can have someone in charge of youth development. Without their remit including, deciding which first team squad players we bring in and being higher up the pecking order than the first team coach/manager. Neither roles have have anything to do with youth development.

Management structures vary from club to club. Job descriptions/specifications will vary to suit each clubs' requirements. DoF at Vale covers everything on the pitch to ensure a common style throughout the club. Takes a few years to set a production line up. But at the same time, L1 status is essential

  4. I don't know the answer to this, so I am only asking. Do Klopp and Guirdiola have DoF's.
Did Alex Ferguson have one, did bill Shankly, Bob Paisley or Brian Clough, now I know they didn't.
We've got a DoF and that's going beyond amazing isn't it.
Truth is either having one or not does not guarantee success or failure. I just think it's overkill at this level. Just another big wage we can't afford. Milton Keynes have been doing it for a few years, and has completely failed at this level.
Main purpose of a DOF at Vale is to build it into a development club and become less dependent upon external funding.

  5. Agreed, it can as the team in control of possession dictates the pace of the game - but if they are a good enough they can speed it up at the drop of a hat. The fact that we can only up the pace successfully one in 5 games is probably more indicative of the quality of the players in league 1. Premier league players can produce the goods more consistently hence cost more.

Prem teams can have the same problems. Depth of quality in the squad, injuries, international call-ups, frequency of games, loss of form. The biggest factor is who the opposition is, as well as the fitness of the squad.

  6. I think the problem isn't the possession based football, its the pace of the game. We played pacey possession based football with a high press against Wigan and the result was very entertaining. Unfortunately when we take our foot off the gas the same system looks ponderous.
Playing high intensity football without a strong bench is difficult. Being the only club in a cup competition in a league is an added burden. January is cup free and may help us physically, but it has its downsides..

Yeah in terms of an upset if we beat these in say Round 1 you'd probably not bat an eyelid, mid table L1 beating mid table Champ sides happen all the time, especially in the League Cup early rounds, on paper its less of an upset than when we beat QPR/Sheff Weds/United as a L2 club in this.

Also in terms of cup runs the lowest opposition, and  only  the second time  for us to win a 5th round cup game.

  8. Comparing the Blackpool and Everton FA Cup holder victories. Against Blackpool, we were a tier 3 team against a tier 1 team that had appeared in the Final 3 times in 8 years, in a 20 year spell in the top tier, at the time more internationals than most top clubs. Quite an achievement.
Against Everton we were a mid table tier 2 with players who would go on to play in the top tier. Whose other achievement was the double over Stoke, which kept them out of the promotion places to the Prem.
Both great wins but are difficult to compare in different eras. Hopefully, history will be made against Boro.

  9. True, I think it was mentioned in a previous thread, its certainly a good one to debate whether it is or isn't our biggest cup game. Aren't we the only side to beat the holders in the FA Cup twice(as a none top flight side at least?).  Everton in 1996 being the other occasion.
It's interesting if you take the games we had to get to the semi final in 1954 and mentioned the teams to people today they don't sound particularly big giantkillings but I think at least 2 of Blackpool, Cardiff and Orient were in the top division in 1954. How times change
Orient were the 3rd South leaders. We obviously were the 3rd North leaders, West Brom, the 1st Div leaders. QPR were in the 2nd Div.

  10. Potentially it has to be the biggest 'home' cup game for us ever as the 2 rounds before the semi in 1954 were away at Brisbane Road and Ninian Park(Orient and Cardiff).
But you are forgetting the 5th round, the only home draw of the 6 rounds. Blackpool the Cup holders with Matthews playing against his boyhood club. First full Vale Park, 42,000, Although 2-0 up, we were nervous. Blackpool had come back from 3-1 down in the final against Bolton to win 4-3 in the last minute.
