In the latest issue (#26) of the excellent magazine Back Pass there is a long article on our ex-player and ex-manager Brian Horton on his career on and off the pitch. Not much about his time at Vale Park, though. The story about the transfer fee was a pint of shandy is mentioned.

 

There is also an article about our ex-goalkeepers Neville Southall and Jim Arnold.

i remember reading the story in gordon lees programme notes at the time so was sure it was him so i have just googled it and horton says mr lee actually bought a member of the hednesford board half a shandy before he signed. berksy didnt end up at vale if i remember correct until lee left for blackburn and roy sproson became manager and bought birks in as his coach

Could have been a 3-0 win over Hereford. Granada covered that match rather than Central but ITV regions used to round up each other's footage at the end of the programme so it could have sneaked on to the end of Star Soccer.

 

Being on the cusp of two ITV regions, Granada used to give Vale and Stoke very good coverage, far better than Central's back in the Tony Francis/Jimmy Greaves era.

I can remember Brian Horton playing for Vale on Star Soccer back in the 70s.

 

White shirt with black pinstripes on the arm...... Vale werent on much back then so was it v Walsall?

 

remember them being on at home to brighton at this time, it may of been when clough went to manage brighton and they were top of league division 3
