iBoom Boom - was it a red?

No it wasn't a red, the referee acted on the end result not on the tackle. I hope Nicholls has a speedy recovery and that it doesn't affect McCombe's game.

I can't be bothered to wade through all the Northampton threads to find out, but I wonder if any Stokies who post on here have reflected that it sounds like what happened in Stoke v Arsenal a couple of seasons ago when Ryan Shawcross broke Aaron Ramsey's leg. Shawcross was sent off in a very similar manner to Boom.

The bitterness directed at Shawcross was unbelievable, and added to by Wenger who appeared to make it his personal crusade to ensure Shawcross never played again. That was fatuous, as is any suggestion from NTFC fans that Boom's mistimed tackle was in any way malicious. It's nice to see Aidy Boothroyd got it right.

EDIT: I should have looked at the last page shouldn't I?

Wrong - the outcome proves nothing. Many injuries just as severe as this happen when no-one is anywhere near them so to say it is a red on that basis is not logical.

I personally have been involved in a tackle where the other guy has come off with a similar injury to this. I knew in my mind that it was a genuine challenge for the ball and I didnt even get spoken to by the ref, it was just pure bad luck. If there had been a camera there and it caught the exact moment when the contact happened I am sure eveyone would have said what a bad challenge it was becasue those types of 'stills' always make it look worse than it was.

I've had a fractured skull as a result of challenging another player for the ball. The injury was no fault of the other player, I just went over his shoulder and landed head down / feet up on a concrete floor. So I know big time how dangerous football can be. Nonetheless, McCombe made a tackle of the type that carries risk. That type of tackle can be within the rules, but when the risk actually arises McCombe has to be held responsible and he has to receive the punishment of a red card for a dangerous tackle. It does not make him a bad person, I have watched him enough to know that he plays the game with a high standard of conduct.
