The flypast has been organised to mark the opening of the new £5.4m gallery at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery.

An iconic Spitfire is due to fly over Hanley - at 12.34pm today.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has commissioned the aircraft as part of celebrations to mark the official opening of the new £5.4 million gallery at the Potteries Museum and Art Gallery.

The city's RW388 Spitfire has pride of place in the gallery after being lovingly restored.

Celebrations and activities are planned for both today and tomorrow, including craft workshops for children, street performers, living history groups, special film screenings, talks and music.

The activities will take place at the museum, Smithfield, Mitchell Art Centre, Bethesda Chapel and Gardens, Piccadilly, the Regent Theatre, the Potteries Centre, and City Central Library.

It had been advertised that the flypast would happen at 12.38pm on Saturday, September 18. But that has now been revised to 12.34pm, although the timing could still change.

Just viewing a Spitfire in Hanley museum sends shivers down the spine never mind seeing one flyover and hearing the distinctive sound of the Merlin engine and seeing the iconic plane with it's distinctive wing shape. A plane designed by Reginald J Mitchell, born in Butt Lane.

Went to Reginald Mitchell Primary School in Butt Lane, the class used to win a bronze statue of a Spitfire for the week if all the class were ever present for the week before.
