I think he remains a solid League 1 level defender, but he is challenged to cope with big strong centre forwards. He uses skill, mobility and timing, but sometimes that is not enough. I thought Kay would be a good partner, but he seems to have made us vulnerable to the ball over the top and not dominant on crosses. But I guess we could do more to stop dangerous crosses coming in. Overall verdict out, has potential, no signs a Championship side are coming in for him yet.

The issue for me is both smith and Kay like to attack the ball so are too similar. Last year smith attacked streete swept up. Put a streete or that kind of player with either of them and they will look better. Showing my age but aka glover/aspin.

 

I want Smith to be a succes obviously. But I don't think the defence was good last year. Whether that was because they were left exposed is a mute argument, but the facts are we went down.

He has struggled this season and cost us yesterday but he is still young and learning. Had a great season last year when pressure is off him as a rookie but this year the expectations on him are much higher and maybe that is affecting him.

 

Exactly what Morgan referred to as why big clubs won't take a gamble on a young centre half just yet. He has the quality and abilities though we have seen that and will come out, what is crucial is that he doesn't get slaughtered from the fans to destroy his confidence.
