Port Vale official: EFL FUTURES TO HELP CLUBS PRODUCE YOUNG ENGLISH PLAYERS

It just isnt going to work. There was an interesting discussion on 5live the other day with Charie Adam and Joey Barton and they made some great points about premier league clubs stock piling players for all age groups up to u23s. Plus on top of that they are also buying in top foreign talent too at all age groups, so really its getting even harder for English lads to make it. Those players then released up to the age of 23 then cascade down from the premier league to the lower leagues and the homegrown youngsters of teams in lower leagues then miss out too.

I also don't think it works in the big picture. As PV1973 says there is a huge problem with PL clubs stockpiling talent. They do it not only in the hope that one or two of the hundreds may make it but also to prevent other clubs getting their hands on talented youngsters.

I also have ZERO faith in the Football League's Shaun Harvey a CEO who burbles on in marketing speak and was responsible for (and still seeks to justify) destroying the Football League Trophy.

However, on a side note...

As Vale are playing 20 year-old Nathan Smith who is English qualified do we get a cut of this money this season? I presume it depends on if Smith is sold in January but if he's not then he's highly likely to play 90-odd% of our games.

You only have to look down the road and know that they have brought through very few players over the last 10 years, probably longer than that since Pato and Dicko came through. So all those players within all their age groups have been going out of the game or slowly working their way down the leagues to local non league levels.

Equally in that time frame we haven't brought through many either. So to see players like Smith, Gibbons, Turner, Lloyd and Sam Johnson make debuts over recent times seems a bit unprecedented really and that bodes well for our youth set up. But you're going to find that the vast majority of English youngsters in the Premier League will be farmed out on loan at lower leagues, like Sam Hart, and will probably end up not making it at their parent clubs, in particular the big clubs purely because they can afford to bring in anyone they want from any country at virtually any price. So unless they curb the amount of foreign players or limit squad sizes then I don't think it'll matter too much to the premier league about a player being English, they'll do whats best for them.

But even if EFL clubs suddenly start playing loads of English players what are the chances of them playing for England anyway? Slim as they're not playing in the Premier League.
