centre of excellence (how important ?)

Recommended Posts

All the C of E's are becoming academies and all the existing academies are being re graded, or have already been so. this is as a result of the Elite Player Programme. Bit like Polys becoming Universities a few years ago!

Stoke and i think Crewe have been graded as a level 2. I know both are taking boys from under 12 upwards out of school for some sort of day release from this season. Stoke are using the Sir Stanley Matthews Academy ( old Blurton High School.) Think Vale are hoping to be graded as a Level 3, though not quite sure what the implications of this is. Not 100% sure on this lot, so once more I stand corrected.

Is that being kicked in this season? Have You got a list for what all the academies have been graded at?

Not sure mate to be honest. i only know this info because my lad knows kids at Stoke and Crewe. I do know that they are both doing the school day release thing. Think to achieve Level 1 status you have to spend 3-5 million quid a year on the Academy so i'm guessing the real big boys will be the only ones who achieve this status.

Think Stoke are really upping the game in the Academy Dept, with the re appointment of Dave Kevan and the investment in the Coerver Academy course for their boys. You also have a couple of outstanding coaches within the younger age groups in particular

Yeah I never expected us to get the grade 1 status after reading what is needed. I'm not a massive fan of the new proposals from what I've read of them. And I still think in this country we need U-19 and U-21 leagues.

It looks that way, the biggest obstacle to it all is still probably TP which is sad. But with this new coaching at least the younger lads should be coached to the best technical ability. Yeah, Chris Swift is one isn't he? We're spending a bit of money on players too, apparently we've just signed a Austrian U-17 'keeper for 300k.

I've always wondered if it's a case of him being overlooked for the better jobs ie the U-18's manager. Or is it that he/the club think he can do better work with the younger ones? Because for years now he has been adulated by everyone I speak to regarding our academy but he's stayed with the kids.

Really it should be about investing TV money into future footballers, some will be internationals, and the rest will play at thier levels, the main thing will be raising skill levels. Some clubs will break-even some will not.

Could be similar to general education, some kids are gifted, others need to be inspired in junior school. Different sorts of teacher for later years, but if the basics have not been grasped in junior school it becomes difficult to catch up. I think in other countries like the Netherlands, Spain and Brazil your man would be more revered, the other age group coaches would be polishing his gems.

Spot on and not knowing the full facts doesn't help either really. I would love to know the actual reasoning though, being the nosey bugger I am!:D

Another good thing for us this season is that we've got a proper reserve side but we're playing in the league You play in and not the Premier League one. TP wasn't impressed with the scheduling of that one.
