Saudi stampede

From memory in drinking water it's something like half a part per million (At a swimming baths it's something like ca 3-5 parts/million) so very minute quantities. There are risks associated with everything and the choice with water is a minute amount of "chlorine" to enable tap water to be drank or don't treat it and run the risk of more bacteria in the water making tap water more dangerous. Tap water is taken from reservoirs etc and passes through pipes etc and gets contaminated by all types of micro organisms that can cause dysentry etc. The same with poultry, a quick wash with water treated with minute quantities of chlorine kills much Salmonella rendering the poultry safer to handle.

I agree with Bea's position saying there should be more accurate labeling of food but costs, accuracy and scaremongering etc all play into this. I recently went to Mexico where it's recommended not to drink the tap water and although very careful I still got a dodgy tummy for a day, just brushing your teeth becomes a "major" event and you wonder what water was used to make the ice in your drink, was it bottled or tap.

Same here..as long as people can make an informed choice and if they don't know what's in something they are still choosing in some cases to consume something they don't know about..not that everyone always has a choice of course

I never take ice in drinks in any bar/pub/restaurant..nor do I touch bowls of nuts/peanuts left on a bar!!!

Way off topic here...

Indeed

OK except whether the chicken wash is quick or not, the chlorine levels can cause problems which is why this practice is banned here, in the EU and most everywhere else. Again and again I have to ask why does the US insist on doing things that other countries consider unsafe - the other countries don't make work for nothing and it costs them money but they obviously care about protecting their public more. I NEVER get an answer to this question, if you have one that is not off at a tangent please do tell.

You don't have to go as far as Mexico from here for water problems either, it didn't affect me in Yorkshire but I know some of our posters had contaminated water for 4 weeks in most of Lancashire and that meant bushing teeth etc. with bottled or boiled water.

Nothing has been revealed about the source of the contamination (cryptosporidium bacteria), I saw Davidatpreston is convinced fracking is to blame as the tests were within a mile or so of the water plant, my own semi-paranoid theory is just that the privatised water companies here are sloppy, inefficient and just not careful enough. Water is too precious to trust to profiteers, Id rather pay a little more than be poisoned.

Meanwhile, you are right we went off topic,,,,, and those lovely Saudis, full of truth, honesty and integrity are at it again....

Disrespecting the dead by covering up the figures is pretty low, even by the standards that of those 'people'.
