I've just done a short "cult hero" feature on Sam Bennion who served the club for decades.

 

For those who may not know much about Bennion, I would advise you read it and find out how one man was a fan, official, player, manager, director, chairman and even club saviour!

 

In my view, that puts Bennion right up there alongside Roy Sproson as a Vale legend of the highest order.

Thanks for sharing that story, Rob. Mr. Bennion was truly a "cult hero" whose achievements will likely never be repeated. I wonder, does he have any descendants out there who are still Vale fans?

He certainly seems to be a fascinating character but there's remarkably little written on him. I had to look through multiple online and offline resources to patch his whole Vale career together.

 

Roy Sproson was different as I think a player has more opportunities to move and thus his loyalty is something else. But as a non-player (well, not quite that...) Bennion appears to be in a class of his own!

It is a pity that some acknowledgment could not be made in his lifetime or at least while members of his immediate family were still alive.
