Vale's first against Spurs in '88 - Ray Walker tried those lob-cum-shots at least five times a match, and every single previous one had gone over the bar, but this one dipped last second and went in. Pandemonium.

A painful experience was when I decided to do an impression of Ken Hancock the legendary goalkeeper by saving a Colin Grainger piledriver which flew wide of the mark. I had the panels of that ball imprinted on the palm of my hand for days. After that day I left the goalkeeping to Hank.

John Nicholson was a big favourite of mine. My dad wrote to him when someone pinched my autograph book and Nicko the then Club captain sent me a new one with a lovely letter and the whole team's autographs. It broke my heart when he was later sold to Doncaster and a short while after he was killed in a road accident. I cried for days.

It was players like John Nicholson who convinced me that Port Vale would always be my team.

For instance I remember the early days as a child looking forward to the monday night matches with the excitement of those floodlit games.

 

Ten to seven on a Monday night, waiting for the PMT duplicate bus from Newcastle to Burslem to pick up all the Vale fans from Bradwell Brit. Me, Mooey Wright, Sigger and the rest.

 

Etched on the memory forever.

Walking the 35 miles to Shrewsbury on a sponsored walk organised by Bill Lodey. Yes the same Bill Lodey. Bill is a Vale fan, many forget that fact. Anyway I couldn't walk for days after but it was very memorable as we came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2. Happy days. This is another reason why Port Vale belongs to the fans,

Early memories player wise-Bernie Wright and chants of Bernies Eeevil. A season or 2 after chants of Stevie Fox is always running. Bobby Newtons always scoring. Can you hear the paddock calling. Bobby is our king. Bobby and Ernie Moss-2 fine figures of men. Remember beating Bury away 1 0 and Nev Southall having a blinder.
