I'd like us to sign a couple of permanent strikers in the 20-23 age range, some first team experience at L1/L2 level with a few goals to their name.

We're in a bit of a mess with strikers.

Everything is so short term and we barely keep a striker beyond 6-12 months (apart from Wilson who is always injured).

Would be good to get a couple of forwards on a 2-3 year deal and try and develop our own.

    You’ve just described Jake Young.

I would recommend watching his Swindon goals. Scored some great goals and tap ins!

Pete O'Rourke just tweeted that he understands that Charlton have won the race to sign Uche

I would love to know the fee Brian.

Charlton also matched the bid for Will Goodwin at 400k so I think we would have got a really good fee. I’m thinking around 250k. I will drive him down to the valley myself for that kind of money. Great bit of business if we can get a good replacement.

I think that IF the story is true (and that's a big if) then it will be down to what Vale get for Uche that would determine if he goes or not.

I would hope the approach will be - we don't have to sell him now and clubs will need to be prepared to pay over the odds if they want him.

You would hope so Rob knowing Charlton in particular are desperate for another striker option.

This could be another Ryan Johnson moment in the transfer window.

  4. I maybe in the minority but if Uche leaves that’s  no bad thing for me.  Lad will never score a goal in a million years.  Yes pins and spins defenders in some games but have to say I’ve been very disappointed with him overall. When any defender has not bothered to engage in a physical battle and just let him have the ball he’s looked extremely poor.

You would have to believe we have another player lined up, if we get a  fee for a player with 5 months left on his contract who is probably one of if not the highest paid player at the club then that’s good business for me.

We'll be rate. It's not like Devine was tearing it up every week. He had some good games, some poor ones. Ultimately I expected more from him in terms of goals and assists output all things considered. He was better played deeper but he didn't really start to do that until quite recently.

He made us tick post Blaster leaving.Opened up space for Chizzy and Wilo. Head and shoulders above anyone else in the team the past 2 months for me.

Playing a 5-2-2-1 formation, we're still left with Ojo, Weir and Sang for those two deeper midfield places. Garrity can play there also and then there's Walters who will need to play games sooner or later if he's to really improve. People need to relax.

Devine was a talent but ultimately got one assist in the league and two goals, one being a penalty. They're not impossible stats to replace.

Garrity long term injury, Ojo injured medium term, Sang struggling with injury and Weir is more of an advanced player, Walters is learning.  We are very very short mate.

I think your being a bit short sighted if you think its Alfie's stats to replace.

    Crewe League games - 20

    Goals - 3

    Assists - 2

I watched Crewe play Swindon at the weekend and more impressed by Aaron Rowe.I believe he's on loan from Huddersfield. He looks a really good prospect.

  8. @Devine intervention need to change your name mate.

A big blow losing Alfie, our best player last 2 months. Have to say not surprised about a Champ move he can easily play at that level. He's not looked out of place for us as a 6, 8 or 10 which shows his class.

At the start of the season it was easy to see we had one of, if not the best midfield in the league with Ojo,Blaster,Devine & Garrity which is why I was so frustrated with our manager. I feel he wasted the opportunity with his ponderous and negative approach.

Pressure now back on Flickers to work his magic to fill a very big hole. Would like to think we have at least one lined up to announce otherwise Saturdays line up is going to be interesting.

  9. @Osh bang on the money.

Looks like a good loan to me. Balmer was a squad player only so bring in another lad who is expected to be a starter and therefore an upgrade.

On paper 2 good loan players so far. Permanent LWB, either CM or RWB and another loan ST option then it would be a decent window.

Will be gutted if rumours are true about Alfie if not surprising. I think he’s been our best player for the past 2 months and really stepped up since Arblaster injury.

Just been told we're getting Rhys Williams from Liverpool and Balmer is going back to Palace.

I don't know anything about Rhys Williams but Kofi's return to Palace appears inevitable. Unfortunately he's been a liability when he has played.

The best Vale signings were not part time footballers stepping up to the football league but unwanted, talented guys from the big clubs. Reading through Rudgie’s book, it is remarkable how many of our greats like Guppy, Aspo, Robbie Earle, Glover, Mills, Ainsworth, Foyle etc etc all shared a history of having been on the books of big clubs before coming to us.

The number of non league legends is actually very very small.

Even today, our best signings like Wilson, Chislett (Southampton), Garrity (Blackpool) had a history of being coveted for their talent by bigger clubs.

Our most likely route of success is to look to the big clubs. Look at the talent in those u23 paint trophy games and look for rough diamonds there to improve.

As the standard of Premier and Championship has moved far away from league 1, so has non league from the league 1 and 2. Don’t be fooled by a few strong clubs in the national league, the standard is worse than ever down there.

You can't watch a lot of football at non league.

The standard of NL is the strongest its ever been even outside the likes of Chesterfield. 95% of clubs in the league are pro, 50% of those clubs compete with L2 salaries and NLN &NLS leagues is full of young lads who for whatever reason have dropped down to get football rather than sat in u23's football.

There are some very good footballers down in those leagues. The trick is to catch the right age and background to develop them. Players with a good football education will look much better playing with better players.

Non league is a great route. Would you rather take a 20- 22 year old with 50+ appearances at NL league level who was at a cat1 academy or a 20- 22 year old released from cat1 academy who has not played mens football?  I know which ones I would take.

I have no idea. He was the only player who is available who can do much of what Garrity does. Does show how quickly football can turn around, in August he was wanted by Portsmouth,  Derby, Blackpool and Reading. He was very, very good for Morecambe.  He can play as a 10, right midfield, holding midfield, centrehalf and fullback.  I suspect Brighton are still hoping he'll come through but desperately want him playing regularly.  I don't think he quite fitted how Blackpool play. At Morecambe he often sat just behind the centreforward,  I think he even started an odd game at centreforward.

If you want my best guess, Denver Hume from Portsmouth.  Alternative would be a fee for Adam Mayor from Morecambe whose a left sided player and pretty young. I believe Morecambe have money problems.

The player I'd love to see at Vale is Charlie Kirk,  although I don't see it happening.

I’m expecting Denver Hume to be resurrected and I would love Kirk as well.

We are light in CM, I wonder if we will bring a player in or just treat Sang as a CM and recruit a RWB.

A player who really stands out at NL level RB/RWB is Kieran Coates. He has genuine electric pace to burn and is exceptional defensively with a really good delivery. He’s better than Mitch now from the handful of games what I’ve seen of him this season and last year. Only a young lad but with lots of appearances already.Certainly the type of player who I’d like us to add with a long term view but could more than hold his own now.

  13. Great thread to start.

When the Jan transfer window closes I think we will it be much clearer to pick but based on teams played my bottom 4:

    Cambridge

    Shrewsbury

    Carlisle

    Fleetwood

Leyton Orient could do a Vale and get dragged into it!

  14. I'm not a fan of these season long loans with a recall clause in the Jan window so the player can be recalled and sent to another club from a higher league or even a club in a higher position in the same league. Think it makes a bit of mockery for competion over a 46 game season allowing bigger clubs to cherry pick talent from the the 1st half the season.

Can you imagine the uproar if Blaster signs for Portsmouth,Bolton or Derby?

Hopefully we could take advantage ourselves but either way not a good thing for football.

That’s actually a bargain. Rovers had agreed 800k odd in August. I see we are looking at unproven league 2 chancers as usual.

You sometimes get the impression from the club that they preferred being in league 2.

Do you think? He would be available for nothing in June.

Terrible deal. Peterborough chairman pulled a blinder.
