Formations

I would say the wide players in that formation were wingers. When we play 3-4-3 we have wingers but they cut inside more

Depends on your definition of wingers.  The way 2 of the 3 forwards play in that formation is more reminiscent of the old outside left / outside right.  I just see them as wide forwards rather than true wingers.  It’s a technicality really.

Watching the top teams makes me wonder what exactly is our style of play.

We play the ball around across the back four but then it either goes back to the keeper to launch it on to their Centre Half's head. If not it's out to either the left side or right side for it to be played aimlessly forward. Very rarely do we try to play it through midfield.

Is this because we don't have the players in midfield to do this and drive forward. My personal thought is that this is the main problem

The obvious solution is to get players in to be able to do this or if as seems the case they are out of our price bracket then we need to play a different way.

I've noticed that all the teams at the top of league 1 aren't shy of playing the ball up quickly to wide men that stretch our 3 central defenders.

I think we'll continue to struggle until we find a way around these issues as we don't have enough pace and power to put the opposition on the back foot

All these wannabe football managers saying we should play 4-4-2, we don't have the players for it!

And we certainly don't have the players to completely change mid season, I know some of you are nostalgic from the 'good old days' when life was simpler and before mobile phones, but 4-4-2 is not the way right now.

We got promoted playing 3-5-2

Plymouth play 3-5-2

Sheffield Wednesday play 3-5-2

Ipswich play 3-4-3

Bolton play 3-5-2

4-4-2 is not the answer to your problems.
