I guess I don't mean the size in terms of land area, I mean the scale as in the height and geology of the land. The south downs are pleasant but pretty dull to pass through.

With massive amounts of respect LV, you must have had your eyes closed if you think the South Downs pleasant but pretty dull.  Yes, they are a farmed landscape, much like many of our other National Parks, and gently undulating in terms of hills compared to the more mountainous parks, but they are stunningly beautiful in many places.  

Can we open a new thread for "favourite type outdoor spaces which theoretical outgoing/incoming managers might want to go to with their families if they were to move, but haven't done so yet", since this is supposed to be a transfer thread?
