Upgrade appeal latest

Thank you very much for your donations. I have yet to calculate them all but I think we are pretty close to our target. If we have gone over it, I will pass any excess on to the #savethevale appeal once everything has been paid for.

 

We have had two very kind anonymous donations and plenty of others - I am grateful for each one, large and small, especially in these tough financial times. I am also appreciative of the many kind offers of help and offers of support. We do really try and do the best for you to enjoy this site and the change to the other forum was a mistake which we have rectified.

 

So, I'd just like to say - if you have suggestions. comments, criticism or the like I'm happy to hear from you. I know people can get frustrated and vent steam on the forum but it's not very helpful for a couple of reasons - a) I'm less likely to read it on the forum than if it is sent directly to me (I don't read every post) and b) I'm only human and I'm less likely to rush to help people who are slamming my website (which I have managed for 15 years) publically than those who come to me in an adult manner and explain their issues. Twitter users note - I also ignore rude remarks sent via that too.

 

Anyhow... back to the news you really want to hear...

 

** Server **

 

I have ordered a new server upgrade. Thanks to my long-standing account with my hosts I got a slight discount too so I was able to go for an even more powerful machine than I expected. They (the hosting company) have been given all the OVF stats and reckon this server is a) needed and b) will cope with the traffic without the site crashes.

 

The server was being prepared last week so I am hopeful we may be able to switch over in 24/48 hours - certainly before the busy Easter period. The good news is there will be no downtime as it is all automated. The bad news is - some forum posts may disappear (probably the last few days).

 

** New forum **

 

I am going to wait till the new server is set-up before upgrading the forum. I have looked the process up and it looks like something that could be done in an evening - the site will have be unavailable for that time.

 

** Mobile **

 

The third part of the process will be to do the mobile stuff. This is in two stages:

 

1. I will try and sort out Tapatalk today (this wasn't possible with the other forum as it wasn't compatible). But it does work with this forum and it should be a ten min job to get it working again.

2. I will then enable the mobile suite that should enable anyone using a smart phone to see a mobile version of this forum.

Cheers Rob. As you've said we're very grateful for all the donations, both large and small. We all know just how hard it is in this economic climate and there are lots of demands on our cash. Some, obviously come before others so thank you all again!
