2000 onwards, ive said for a long time is when weve got gradually worse, we had this discussion in work last night, the last time i enjoyed watching england was in the 2004 world cup, and before that the 1998 world cup and euro 96, other than that like i say and stand by 2000 onwards weve got worse. lionel messi versus our defence? what a laugh, germany have sweinsteiger in midfield where as we have jordan henderson? you can't even compare them.

Talk about missing the point................I never said there was a golden age before the premier league, what I am saying is simple, we will not be able to cultivate our own players in Britain because of the enormous amount of foreign players that now populate the money grabbing at all costs premier league.

What you talking about Willis? I never said you did! I was quoting someone else when I was talking about that, and only replied to you because you beaked in. Jesus wept.

As for cultivating our own, it could be argued that having the best English players going up against the best in the world every week has its benefits. Those who would have played in the top league now play in he championship, while the elite p,ay in what has become a super league of sorts.

Check out our record throughout the whole of the 70's. Far far worse than anything now. We barely qualified for anything. Probably the worst decade in our history. 84 and 94 we failed to qualify, with numerous times getting knocked out at the group stages in between and around those dates. With the odd decent quarterfinal or semi final, our record has been distinctly average, and often terrible.

Much better performance from England, albeit against a French side that was largely going through the motions for obvious reasons. We kept the ball much better and had some really good individual performances from the likes of Stones and Alli, who are the future of our national side. When you consider the average age of our potential best 11 it really is quite exciting if the group can grow together.

Hart/Butland (28 & 22)

Clyne/Walker (24 & 25)

Stones (22)

Smalling/Jones (25 & 23)

Bertrand/Gibbs/Shaw (26, 26 & 20)

Delph/Dier (25 & 21)

Wilshere/Oxlade-Chamberlain (23 & 22)

Alli/Barkley (19 & 21)

Sterling (20)

Sturridge/Walcott (Both 26)

Kane (22)

Add to that the likes of Galloway (19), Loftus-Cheek (19), Lingard (22) and Ibe (19) who will more than likely break though in the next year or two and I see many reasons to be quietly optimistic.
