They gave democracy up when they ousted the democratically elected winner before he'd served a year.

 

To be fair, it's a hell of a lot more complicated than that, and it seems that morsi was well on the way to moving the country away from democracy already (as well as towards bankruptcy).

 

Although the best form of government we have, democracy has its downfalls and can be fragile, especially in a fledgling democracy where a leader was originally only supported by a quarter of voters in the first round and narrowly won based on what turned out to be lies, and votes against what seemed to be the old regime as opposed to supporting him. With this backdrop, the state of the economy and the constitutional changes he forced, as well as the control he enforced over critical media outlets, the outcome was inevitable. Not only were many of his decisions moving away from democracy, but also just plain daft in the climate the country was in. It seemed he felt that they had done the voting part of democracy, and now he could do what he liked and change what he liked. His own idea of what democracy was, it seems is very different to what it everyone else does.

Has democracy been rejected, or has a regime dressed up as democracy been rejected. I dont think there is a simple answer to it. It will be resolved eventually, unfortunately how many will die before them is the question.

There was a lady on RS this morning talking live from Cairo,she had lived there for a few years and she said that there was a curfew in the city from 9pm until 6am.The Muslim Brotherhood were regarded as terrorists and she said that supplies were quickly running out because of road blocks leading into the city.She reckoned that supplies of food and water to homes and hotels were being restricted because of the upheaval.

Some of the stories coming out of Egypt under the reign of the Muslim Brotherhood, particularly ones around women's rights, were pretty grim.
