  1. Full marks to the players and staff today. To clinch the win after the way the game panned out, and following on from the disappointment of Tuesday, shows great team spirit.  Best of all the support from our fans was top drawer.  The singing from the home stands after Wigan had scored their opener was outstanding, not to mention the backing of Loft, albeit some of that was gallows humour.

I want to look forward to Saturday's with a genuine, realistic hope that we can win and leave feeling entertained at 5pm. I want to go to away games with a proper 'buzz' that I could make a few nice memories with my Dad.

Don't expect promotion or to win every week. Winning 9 league games in a calendar year is dull, miserable, and nukes any excitement I have. The games become more a duty than something I'm looking forward to all week.

I don't think I'm asking for too much. Just a good time.

This is Port Vale, expect some extreme lows coupled with some mild highs.  Occasionally the mild highs will reach above mild but never extreme, unlike the lows.

Bishops Cleeve and Tuffley Toen won’t be covered by just one journalist though like we have currently with Mike so it’s not really a fair comparison

Obviously Bishops Cleeve and Tuffley Town won’t be covered by just one journalist, they’re big clubs.  Maybe when we get to their size we can have a journalist to ourselves. 👍🏻

Think he means the actual newspaper Ray, which some of us neanderthals still buy as opposed to the online paper. They do actually write something every day about Vale in there else I wouldn't buy it but there is a predominance of Stoke as expected

People still buy an actual newspaper?  The question then would be why can’t that news find its way online?  Maybe it does and I’m missing it.

I hope the club are going to give this game plenty of plugs at the Stevenage and Wigan games, and have the ticket office/shop open afterwards for sales.

As things stand they won’t be plugging it to many fans at the Stevenage game, plus I’d guess the vast majority of those attending that one will already have bought their ‘Boro tickets.

Because I’d imagine in the case of Stevenage and forest green they’re the only club in their area. So it’s easier to report as they’ll only need the one reporter. Whereas the one reporter in our area gets taken up by stoke.

We’re not the only club who suffers from this. Pretty sure tranmere don’t even get bbc coverage of their games.

They’ve also got a fraction of our support and potential readers.  Forest Green are in Goucestershire so they’re competing for coverage with Cheltenham and also Gloucester Rugby.  They obviously have more than one reporter down there yet we don’t.  In fact I can look on the Gloucester Live sports pages and read about the likes of Bishops Cleeve FC and Tuffley Town while you’re trying to justify having no Vale coverage in the Sentinel.

Not really a fair comparison though. I hate stoke obviously but they’re a far bigger club than us. When was the last time we had 20k in the ground? You’re living in dreamland if you think they’d share a reporter with vale.

Why is it not fair?  Why can I read about a club with a much smaller fan base than ours if advertising revenue is the reason behind the lack of coverage in our local paper?  Also, I think we’ve shared reporters in the past on occasions, though obviously not long term.

Doesn’t take a genius just a reporter who can be in two places at the same time for matches and press conferences that occur concurrently. I’d have assumed it’s simple economics, Stoke have more fans (time in the Prem. created a huge global audience and potential interest in following them from afar and that is still reflected in interest in online news stories etc), ergo more potential ‘readers’ of the on-line pages so the pages attract more advertisers/pop-ups which means the Sentinel/their owners can keep posting articles for ‘free’.  Perhaps the Vale articles didn’t generate enough hits to sell the advertising space so the Sentinel decided not to replace Mike when he left and they can’t afford to pay him now so subsidise that with a ‘fee for story account’?

I agree it stinks that a ‘local’ newspaper doesn’t equally or even adequately cover the two local (3 if you count Crwho) league teams, have any fans written letters to the editor (of the Sentinel/their owners) to complain or threaten a boycott? It would certainly be interesting to see what happens with coverage if the two Stoke-on-Trent teams end up in the same league in the next year or two but in the meantime it is what it is and it’s each fan’s choice to determine the value of The Valiant to them.

Fair comment about being in two places at once, and since our near neighbours dropped out of the Prem many more of the fixtures clash.  That said it’s still easily possible for one journo to offer more coverage of the Vale than is currently the case, there just isn’t the will to do it.  As I said I can go online and read about any other league club, and plenty of non-league clubs for that matter, so the cost excuse is just that, an excuse, unless you really believe that clubs with much smaller fan bases than ours will draw in more readers.

I can understand this view, but the reality is, it’s this or nothing.

Like it or not we’ve got to face the fact it’s not profitable for reach plc to employ someone to solely cover the vale. We aren’t a big club. Local journalism is struggling so they’ll be cutting costs where they can.

    So, there’s two options:

    1. Don’t employ someone to specifically cover vale. Include pretty basic match reports (maybe even provided by the club) along with a real barebones coverage, but this is provided in the paper/on the website.

    2. Use their current model where we have a dedicated Port Vale journalist, writing 3/4 high quality articles a week - for £10 a year.

Personally it’s a no brainer to me and I’d go for the second every time, but like I said I do understand the frustrations behind having no free coverage.

Perhaps you can explain how other newspapers manage?  I can go online and read the latest on Stevenage or FGR for example.  It doesn’t take a genius to come up with the idea that the Sentinel could employ just one reporter who’s job it is to cover both Stoke and Vale.

Whatever you think of Flitcroft, the Valiant is a ludicrously good bargain.

For the record I don’t have a axe to grind with Flitcroft.  Some good things going on at the club but obviously everyone will look to the results on the pitch, which is fair enough.  The point I was making is that as an ex-football manager a lot of what he says is just to placate the fans, and the way Flitcroft says it is “wordy” to say the least.

In terms of the Valiant and your tenner it depends on what you want and need to know.  Also, I still don’t see it as a positive that the local rag have zero Vale coverage.

In his first league start yesterday he was really quite anonymous.  He, his agent and some fans need to understand he's probably not as good currently as they think he is. He's a fantastic prospect, but probably not yet a starter in league 1. There is a big jump in intensity from any of the 3 cups he's played in.

Correct.  The same can be said for all of the young players, Arblaster excepted, and he’s struggled at times.  To become regular starters on merit the likes of Devine, Thomas and our own youngsters have to show far more consistency throughout a game and then repeat that week in week out.  This will only come by playing and the likes of Walter’s may get more minutes with us than he would another club at this level.  Like you say he’s a great prospects at the moment rather than anywhere near the finished article.

  12. I haven’t subscribed as I don’t think it’s value for money and reading this thread has only reinforced my view. Flickers is a waffler of the first order so anyone that takes anything he says at face value must have fresh air between their ears.  That’s not to suggest he’s doing a bad job, or a good job.  The reality is likely to be a bit of both.

Loft is no where near as bad as people are making out.

We're just shocking as a team right now.

Haaland/Kane/Mbappe wouldn't score in this side with the way we setup and don't create real chances.

    * puts tin hat on *

I tend to agree with this but in all fairness he’s looked terrible bar the odd flash.  Someone mentioned his fitness, lack of, and they may have a point.  Pretty sure he hadn’t played much latterly at BR.  Ultimately you can only go on what you see on the pitch so it’s up to Loft to prove the doubters wrong.

Pete Wild is the obvious choice. Barrow have the fourth least valuable squad in L2 and there they are proudly sitting in 3rd place, so value for money personified and on a shoestring budget. And a win ratio of 44.44%.

But you're right - Crosby isn't going anywhere, not at least until we're rooted in the bottom four with no signs of improvement. My guess is that Carol will stick by him until the last possible moment and then replace him with Dunn until the end of the season, and with a win ratio of 15.22% as a manager, that ain't exactly promising.

To be honest, I think we're skint.

    We’re not skint.

Have you been out of the country for a while?  We’ve spent over £100k on the playing surface over the summer with a similar amount to be spent next summer.  That’s been well reported but you somehow missed it.
If you kept up to date you’d also know that the reason a new roof hasn’t been installed on the Railway loos is because the money is being put to a complete rebuild early next year rather than a patch up.
We’ve invested in team.  Whether that recruitment is good or bad is not down to Carol.
She’s appointed a football person in Flitcroft to make the decisions on the football side of things, then there’s the manager and staff.  She isn’t picking the team or coaching the players.  Plus having owned the football club for a few years now she probably knows more about running a real football club the you and me put together.
These are all facts.  Come back when you’ve got something sensible to say rather than the crap you’re currently spouting.

Buck stops at the top, I'm afraid.

    Since when?

I partly agree... imo no one will come forward with a 13m offer for Vale, thats just silly again only my opinion...

As for Dono my belief is he would like to invest(maybe not buy outright) BUT a outright buyout involving him and others could at some point happen

Have you been walking around with your eyes shut these past few season?  Donno has invested.  Significantly.

    Why is it?

Carol sacks everyone, Speedy, Garlic, Clarke and replaces them with her son and Crosby! Shameful treatment after what he went through and we replace him with his assistant without interviewing anyone! Absolute joke.

Doesn’t invest in the team for how long now. Can’t find the money to finish the Lorne Street concourse but can for a few hundred in the posh seats. Now the paddock is knackered and can’t be bothered sort that out and doesn’t tell us the reason for this but comes out with poor excuse of the toilets needs fixing! How many months does it take to sort out toilets??

No update from the club about anything just expects fans to turn up and keep paying without any sign of progress.

Turns down offers for the club when it’s clear as day that’s she hasn’t got the money for us to progress yet somebody has and she’s doesn’t want this investment to help the club. Suppose to be a fan but that’s not the actions of someone who wants the best for the club.

O well at least we have a nice new scoreboard for when we will be back in league 2 at this rate.

The club is going backwards, open your eyes.

Clearly everything isn’t rosy right now on the pitch but yours is a bit of a one eyed view.  Ok people have come and gone, that’s life unfortunately.  But we’ve actually invested heavily in the team.  We spent somewhere north of 100k on the pitch that everyone was crying out for.  The Railway bogs are going to be completely redeveloped.  The scoreboard was replace because the old one was dead and it was part of the end swap.

The biggest problem we have is that there isn’t an oil sheik waiting to throw millions at the club to bring overnight success that people crave.

I would hope that he was annoyed at his own poor performance, rather than at being subbed. Last night he contributed very little, apart from a 'pea-roller' of a shot in the first half.  Not sure we can keep playing both him and Arblaster in the same team against the better teams.

Totally agree.  From what I’ve seen of Devine  I wouldn’t have him as a starter, either Chizz or Plant all day long for me.
