Afternoon everyone,

 

Not posted on here before but I run a website which features interviews with former professional footballers.

 

Just uploaded an interview with Alex Williams, who spent a few years at Manchester City before moving to Port Vale in the 80s, where a back injury forced him to retire early.

 

Went on to receive an MBE in 2002 for services to the community.

 

We'll be uploading more interviews with former Vale players over the next few weeks.

Don't wish to be a wet blanket but he doesn't have a lot to say about Vale does he? More or less he says the only reason he came to Vale Park was so he could get decent physio.

 

Thanks Alex; I liked you as a player but I forgot just how much pro footballers use clubs as much as clubs use them. Good luck in what you're doing now anyway.

I will always remember my first ever Vale game back in 1986 when Alex Williams played in goal for Vale and went on to let in five goals in a game at Walsall at the old fellows park ground and I remember we were absolutely slaughtered in that game. Fred Barber had just signed on loan for Walsall in goal from Everton. I remember thinking 'This guy in goal for us is hopeless'

 

Couldn't have helped that he was suffering from a back injury at that time. It was an FA Cup 2nd Round match and the score ended 5-0- I think Robbie Earle pulled one back only for the goal to be ruled out.
