    No - we are not!

I’d say we are a bigger club than Carlisle and similar size to Bristol Rovers.  I’d also say we are as big a club as Oxford who are 5th, bigger than Stevenage who are 6th, bigger than Lincoln who are 9th and Northampton in 10th, bigger than Cambridge and Shrewsbury (13th &14th).

Saying that, I don’t disagree with what you are saying, Crosby is doing OK- I like his style of play bar the fact we have not got a decent striker- on the flip side, he is tactically useless, with his one style of play and his consistency of making us worse with his substitutions, his determination to play Massey who is hopeless and to play players out of position to accommodate him, his tinkering of our defence and constant playing players out of position, plus he needs to give up on Loft.

As a club we won’t particularly progress under Crosby but he will most likely keep us up this season which with our signings is an achievement in itself- he ain’t great but he is no way near as bad would make out and to get rid at this current stage of the season and to trust Flitcroft with a better replacement would be a massive gamble and a costly one as we are not going up and very unlikely to go down.

What an odd response? Recent history would suggest that Lincoln and Oxford are bigger clubs than us?

You "like his style of play...but he is tactically useless with his one style of play!"? In fact, one poster recently swatted away a post like yours with "he changed the formation 3 times in one game"!

"His determination to play Massey who is hopeless..." yet, many have remarked that he has upped his game this year, and they can see the player we thought we were getting? "He needs to give up on Loft"?...again, nonsensical by Loft's obvious improvement in recent games.

"we won't particularly progress under Crosby..." Well - let's see how the second half of the season goes before you can make that sweeping statement?

Andy Crosby will go the way of all Port Vale managers and part company with the club at some point. But how that happens is as of yet unknown despite the rantings of a few on  here who seem to have some strange urge  to make things as difficult as possible for him and in some ways for other supporters such as me who actually like and look forward to going to the games.

We are mid table in 1 having reached a quarter final of the league cup with our top scorer and best midfielder both having recently signed extended contracts, due in no small part to the manager. We have attracted better youngsters from premier league teams than ever before, the money on the pitch looks to have worked as by now it would normally be cutting up, we are actually selling talented youngsters to premiership teams and have young players of our own on the verge of the 1st team. We are trying to change the way we play into a more possession based game so that we can attract better players and the foundation / youth set up is better than ever.

Of course it doesn't mean we are 100% happy with our club as supporters we should always try and drive it forwards with support but basically if you are that unhappy with the club in its current state you need to find yourself a new hobby and not bother going ...  from an overall picture point of view the club is better placed than I can remember. And I've been going since 1971 and my dad and grandad before me.

But instead of waffling on lets give it some context.

Of the clubs who came up with us:

Forest Green (smaller than us) relegated and struggling in league 2

Exeter (about the same size club as us) below us in the league

Bristol Rovers (Larger club than us) : 2 points above us in the league.

None of the above suggests to me that we are as bad as people on here are raving on about.

We can also look at a couple of play off winners who came up the same route as us in the season before and season after us.

Carlisle : (about the same size club as us) below us in  the league

Morecambe (smaller club than us) : now back in league 2

Each to their own but I think the weaker minded people think its somehow clever to swear and run down their own club.

As I've said before we will end up with the team the supporters deserve.

UTV and here's a novelty : enjoy the game.

An excellent, well-thought out post contextualizing where we are, now. Clearly, though, this will be pulled to pieces by those with some kind of agenda against AC and DF...you only have to see the usual suspects who are, apparently, confused by commonsense and logical thinking to know who will be attacking this post?

  4. Sorry for this mini-rant being off-topic! I've paid for 4 Vale games on iFollow and each time I've had to listen to somebody prattling on about "will Stoke find something...let's see how Stoke are doing?" I don't care!!! - I paid to listen to the vale game and don't give a toss how Sjoke are doing - Why does Radio Stoke get in on the act?

Why do you hate Crosby so much. Massive part in taking us up, stepped in when he needed to. Seems a decent fella. Has us mid table. Got to a quarter final. It's just wierd.

He constantly forgets we are Vale. Kind of gets us mixed up with Man City or some such nonsense

He constantly proves he is not a Vale fan!

I cannot disagree with anything in this post Warren. What worries me is that we obviously have a cash problem, certainly going back to Januarys transfer window, if not beyond.

Crosby was the cheap option to replace DC, personally I think we need to replace him, and also bring in key players at LB, LWB and Striker, but because the finance position is certainly no better now, we cannot do this. These are worrying times.

What a load of tosh! Rehashing rumours and conspiracy theories about our finances - we are clearly in a better situation, now, than we were in the summer, having had better income from Cup games than many a recent season. Vale's average home gate in the promotion season 2021/22 was 6103...up to October this season it was 7367.

Crosby's appointment was an obvious one to make - as with players, we are not standing in the way of their personal development.  He felt ready to try his hand at management - no doubt, a cheaper option than an experienced manager - but who would you have brought in? Of those managers without a job, many would have been failures in their last post. The more successful ones, still in a job, would possibly ask for a lot of money to leave their current position? And - let's be honest - as much as appointing AC is, obviously a risk, it is as much of a risk taking on a failed manager, or someone who is happy at their current club.

I've seen recently, a post which, I think, tried to suggest that, because AC didn't play at a good level he probably wouldn't make a good manager? But the likes of Ian Wright, Ian Dowie, Frank Lampard, Alan Shearer, Ossie Ardiles, Alan Pardew and Ole Gunnar Solksjaer...and...arguably...Steve Bruce have never hit the heights they did as players.  Which just goes to prove ANY management appointment can be a risk!

We lost v Middlesbrough by an unlucky deflection, bad mistake in possession at the back and letting a player come inside and shoot. We were lucky that Balmer didn't gift them more goals before the manager subbed him.

The stats are we had 39% possession making 4 shots with 1 on target. That's not going to win games. But Middlesbrough need some credit. You could see they had good defenders and showed it in the way they blocked crosses off. They only made one big mistake and it was Massey who just couldn't keep down the hard hit cross reaching out close to the line.

Middlesbrough dominated possession. 618 passes. What stood out for me watching from Lorne Street was they were technically superior by quite a distance in controlling and manipulating the ball. They also had better player movement in the team to receive the ball in play. They could play quicker than PV in possession because of these factors.

Middlesbrough were happy to make sure PV didn't harm them and did this by simply keeping possession. But their attacking stats are 10 shots, 5 on target and 3 goals. So they were potent.

I can't say whether their great superiority is simply better players with more talent. Or whether better coaching plays a significant part. What did strike me, and worry me a bit, is that Walters looked out of his depth when he came on. So the point I'm making is he would improve much quicker and to a higher level at Middlesbrough.

If we are going to keep the players we bringing through and progress as a club we need coaching to be at Championship level. I don't see that presently at team level or individual level.

... the facts speak for themselves worst performing club in league 1 2023....

That is always going to be a flawed statistic to use, as several clubs have only spent part seasons in League 1, being relegated or promoted to a different League, so not knowing how they would have performed with a full season?

It's not exactly a official fa coaching badge... But having played football manager, I think I can see what they're trying to do behind the scene. Committing to a philosophy and that. I think it's more of a long term plan.. if so I'm assuming the academy is working to towards it too.

Over coming years It's unlikely we will be able lure many proven championship / league 1 players, not in the peak age (21-29) with proven fitness and injury records atleast...  More likely to go to the likes of hollywood fc and other lowly clubs with bottomless pockets.

Our Academy may not be the ultimate answer, but it could a big part of the clubs future and bring sustainability, however Its unlikely too provide instant success. Perhaps with a committed philosophy, they are hoping transitioning these lads into the first team will be smoother? If I was a young player I'd want to join us over the other local clubs knowing I may get a craic. Man City & Chelsea can't sign them all..

Rest of the squad is likely to be well scouted chancers, who have the attributes and experience & character to work in the philosophy. Nothing's certain at this level but I'm trusting the scouting network for now, I'm sure rudgie is still helping the team with his experience. The likes of Chiz, for example, looks a gem of signing and a well liked character in dressing room.

I think ollie and devine will be good patrons for us once they leave, luring other youngsters fancying a craic on loan. We are a perfect stepping stone for the talent from bigger clubs, who play a similar a philosophy.

I do think they could do with working on a better plan b tactic though. I do see small changes in games going against us, perhaps not brazen enough,  Something to work on in the next pre season perhaps. Yesterday was very disappointing, but  let's be honest Boro were clinical.

I'm sure they'll be just disappointed as us, and will wanna bounce back. Anyway I'm probably a fool talking out my hole .. but one things for sure....

Again we go, Super Vale Away this Saturday.. the definition of insanity

    In Crosby I trust

You can not keep using injuries for an excuse of being on a bad run. All teams have injuries and suspensions.

We were really awful against Exeter but got a much needed win which you take everyday and then we played the best football we have done all season against Wigan and fully deserved the 3 points but then we are back to what we have been witnessing for most of the season against Middlesbrough.

You have a team that does well for a few games, then loses players to injuries and does badly - it doesn't matter a jot how other teams are affected, Brian - the fact is, we were doing well until we started to get the injuries that disrupted that team. Now the injured have started to get back to fitness we are improving again, We've lost one to a team in the top six of our League, having drawn against them at theirs; lost to a team in mid-table of the League above us; and won 2 against teams we needed to be beating, around us!  That's improvement over the 10 or so games beforehand. Yes - we got stage fright against Middlesbrough - having played the "best game of our season" the match before - it's not the only rime, over the decades, that Vale have been poor against teams when our expectations have been high!

...we definitely seem to be sleepwalking our way towards relegation and undoing all the hard work of the promotion season

You do know we won the last 2 games? That we are now 15 pts off the playoffs and 9 off relegation? Yes - you could point to the poor run we had before these last wins...but you could point to the good run we had before the poor run, which coincided with a freakishly long injury list! We will not get relegated I'm sure!

Only Ripley, Blaster and Devine are good enough to play at Championship level by say next season. Two on loan to us. So only Ripley.

We can't get there from here. Radical improvement in attendances and off field income needed to get to and remain in the Championship.

I never mentioned getting there this season, or even next. I would say Ojo is good enough too, and we would probably get loanees of at least the same quality as Devine and the Blaster. But, the assumption appeared to be that carol would never make a profit on the vale as we have reached our level - which i don't believe to be true?

    I don't think she'll ever make a profit on us - she'd have to sell for £10m+.

So you're assuming L1 is our level, now? Because if we got back to the Championship, the value  of the  Vale would increase, especially if we did a Rudgie and stayed there for a while!

I remember calling askey out and you dragged out the discussion for nearly 3 pages defending him when we we're terrible and 18th in league 2 and nearing relegation

With the greatest of respect of lancy. You're the last person I want to have a debate with. I envy you because you're a half full glass kind of person and I wish I had that optimistic and positive outlook

But I'm just giving my opinion as is everyone who is entitled.

I wish you nothing but respect and happiness my friend but I've been down this rabbit hole before and I'm not doing it again

Thanks for the respect shown! Yes, I am a glass half-full person, and i look for the positives in anything. Having brought up 4 kids, and with 2 grandkids i believe there is too much negativity in the world and, maybe, things would be a bit better if we were all more positive.

However, having read several pages where I never knew Port Vale had so many medical and scientific experts in their midst, discussing sports science, whilst sharpening their pitchforks ready to attack the monster in the windmill - even I decided to stay clear of that one as it will, clearly run for a while!
