We got the rub of the green today with the results around us. Just a pity (yet again) that we couldn't put away one of the many chances we had this afternoon.

Every match is now a big one,  but Posh next up is MASSIVE.  Hopefully at least one point and no further damage to GD as this could yet, still prove vital!

In Sinai, Moses first encountered God in the form of a burning bush. "I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt". God's voice called out to him (Exodus 3.7). God then charged Moses to lead the Israelites out of bondage and bring them to the Promised Land. That went well? Anyway, I'm God for the weekend and I'm charging Darren Moore to lead the players out of Wigan after he's managed them to get 3 points.

I don’t see Burton winning 4 out of 5 so I would be surprised if we needed 12 points to finish above them.

As for Cheltenham, they would need 13 points out of 7 games to likely stay up on GD if we got 12 more points. That would have to be W3 D4 L0 or W4 D1. Cheltenham might be capable of 10 or 11 points in a best case scenario but they would do extremely well to get 13.

I’m sticking my neck out but I’d be comfortable with 10 points, maybe 9 if our goal difference was better. That said there’s only five goals in it which could still be swung in our favour.

GD could yet be the issue that sinks us--a "five goal swing" is actually massive! I hope I'm wrong.

Really don't feel more optimistic than you, just calculating our needs. We either turn into a promotion team or rely on others to avoid another relegation, maybe in miracle territory. Probably seen as many relegations as you, having been involved from our Div3 South days, never happy times but part of football. Prefer not to see another one.

I can't disagree with that last sentence!

Not really, the alternative to the away win would be 3 away draws.  So an away win at Wigan? Relying on Bolton being in a confirmed number 3 spot and resting players for the POs is another alternative if we need 51 points due to our goal difference.

We've managed 39 points from 40 games so far i.e. barely one point per game. To get us to your 50 points (or maybe more given, our relatively worse GD) we need a  further say 11 or 12 points from just 6 matches i.e. an average of around 2 points per game. A tough enough ask with a team flying full of confidence let alone our current misfiring bunch! I really do hope that you're nearer the mark than me with your calculations, but more than 70 yrs of supporting PV has taught me to be more realistic than optimistic.

Having said all that, my fingers (and everything else) firmly crossed that we can celebrate a minor miracle come the season's end!

Not at all. The bottom five have all lost so it’s onto Saturday. Need a win at Wigan though.

My comment above referred to their second goal. It wasn't insinuating that we're down. All still to play for, but I do believe we'll need 50 points which obviously means another 11 points in final 6 games. A tough ask from this current team!

I was referring to today's game after concedinthat 2nd goal. Hope still burns (perhaps not quite so brightly), but with hope comes expectations and expectation usually ends up in disappointment!

The risk/reward just isn't there for us. If he is currently rated as a top prospect at his age group, then if he stays next year and has a good, even great season, he is still rated a top prospect who has done well at L1 level, I don't think it moves the needle much in terms of transfer fee. If he has a poor season or an injury hit season he is no longer a top prospect & his value plummets.

It is all academic if PL clubs come in for him this summer. It's modern football, young prospects at PL clubs are paid 3-4x what our top earners get & on long term contracts, we simply won't be able to compete with what he is offered elsewhere, we just need to get the best deal possible for the club & it was great work by the club in that regard to tie him down to a contract a couple of months ago.

I don't think we're very far apart in our respective views and you're totally right in your comment regarding the new contract he's signed!

Looks like D day...As results are going we will need 50 points !!

We were always going to require 50 or 51 points.  11/12 points from the last 7 fixtures might have been a possibility.  Unless we get at least one point today, 12 from the last 6 games looking a bridge too far!!

The club won't have much choice if PL clubs come in for him. He will be offered life changing money, which can set him up for life. You can't blame the lad for taking that, football is a percarious career, you don't know if injuries are around the corner, or maybe he just doesn't develop as hoped. PL clubs can afford to take that gamble, we can't.

I think we should.  If he develops the way I suspect he can, his transfer value and potential earnings will only rise!
