It's not as black and white as the last person to touch it gets the assist Dan.

99% of the time, the player who touched the ball last before the ball was then tucked away is classed as 'assisting' the goal.

You do have a point that two players can, but it's very rare, especially over here, and I've yet to see it happen.

Easily. I've read many American soccer match reports that have given an assist to two players. Dave's report on the official site says Richards and Pope combined to set up Rigg.

If Myrie-Williams ran 60 yards past 4 players, crossed a ball which Pope flicked on at the near post for Richards to head in at the far post, who would deserve the assist? MW who did the hard work or Pope who made one touch?

This is priceless Mark, sorry.

Not long ago I was talking about how big a part Pope played in most goals early in the season, and you shot me down giving me stats about only having 1 official assist.

Which means he was officially the penultimate player to touch the ball once.

So, why have you changed your argument just to suit what you're saying?

An assist is an assist, penultimate touch etc. but 'assisting a goal' unofficially can be a number of players. Stats can't really have grey areas, though.

Because you were wrong in your assumption of what we were talking about, jumped in without thinking and were WRONG. At that point we weren't talking about Pope, however you jumped in no the less and I would have thought you would have the common decency to apologise.

However it now appears you have no manners so all the very best in finding some! ;)

so a comment saying hes popes mate isnt about Pope?? no??

So an effective player is not a good one?

His contribution is good for the team. To me if you call somebody a good player then you are saying that player is talented and has ability, and again in my opinion Tom Pope has little. He puts himself about and does the dirty work, which perhaps more talented players in the team will appreciate, and for that he should be applauded.

Squirm as much as you like. You were wrong and jumped to conclusions.

There is no need for personal insults like the one he sustained and you really have to take them with a pinch of salt as the best and most articulate posts attack the post and not the person that has posted. There are a few on this thread who have forgotten it seems.

Like I say I won't hold my breath on an apology :D
