    He'll be back on later and respond to yours and every other post that has the slightest criticism of a football club that has one of the worst records in the football league. He'll then label people who are pointing this out as 'whingers' or some other rubbish. Going to use the block on him again.

    My impression - and it's just that - is that DC was understandably nowehere near being in a fit state to manage the club. I have heard that his behaviour was alarming, Carol has said she wished she'd insisted he'd taken longer off and in one of the recent interviews he gave, Darrell admitted his behaviour (understandably) left a lot to be desired following his daughter's death. I think that's why the senior players approached Carol and possibly why the support DC had been given was mentioned in the statement following his sacking. I'd imagine (no proof whatsoever) that Darrell had been urged to take time away from the club and when he refused, Carol's hand was forced. It's <ovf censored> horrible and so tragic in many ways, and our subsequent travails come way down in that list.
    I still think that the statement was poorly worded and Ellie shouldn't have been mentioned but have backtracked slightly in that I do feel that Carol only let him go very reluctantly and issues were more of a human nature than performance related.

    Well, yeah, that was my understanding too. I recall the day after the Southampton win (?) he put in a transfer request as the travelling back up to the north east was taking it's toll. Certainly never heard anything about his transfer being due to a poor attitude.

    We've heard so many of Rudgie's stories over the years, most of the Vale stuff, even down to the twice repeated "scout, cook and bottle washer" quote, isn't particularly revelatory now. 

    Also felt that Rudgie's disdain for Wenger came more from the co-author than the great man, as did the laughable quote about Stoke playing some of the most attractive football in the country under Pulis in the Premiership. 

    Felt weird when he held back on stuff. One bit in particular where he refuses to detail a revenge prank he pulls on Tiny Penis really made me wonder what he could have done that wasn't able to be published. 

    Also, FYI, "the whole city" did not get behind Sjoke when some bookies paid out early on them getting relegated. 

    On a positive note, I liked the couple of allusions to Aspin being a bit of a weirdo, although again this was glossed over in favour of kick-by-kick accounts of some boring Stoke games. 

    I don't like to be negative and I'm probably being a bit unfair and unrealistic in my expectations. I guess I'm relatively unusual in that I'd love to read several chapters just about Andy Porter, or a detailed breakdown on the signing and release of Oliver Heald. Even if not that, then a bit about John Rudge ' the man', rather than pages of I paid X and sold for y. Lots of this just reads like it was collated from wiki and old Sentinel reports. A shame really.

    Finally, there's absolutely no excuse for the phrase 'the game was afoot' to be used twice.

    I thought there was a thread for this but can't find anything.

    Anyway, just about to finish this and wondered what others thought. I genuinely love JR but am not so keen on the book. Partly this is due to me not wanting to read Rudgie's descriptions of his successes at Stoke (I'm surprised about how much this sticks in my craw) and also because I don't think the ghost writer really captures Sir John's voice very well. It's not very well written and a certain number of phrases are repeated to an annoying degree. It just doesn't feel like it's Rudgie at some stages. And I certainly don't want to hear about his "conduct, gentlemanly or otherwise" on his wedding night!
    By their nature, football books can be quite formulaic and repetitive and I wish that this had been an exception. One of the things I love about JR is how he seems to be such a lovely human being and I don't think this comes across. There are a few bits that veer quite close to 'needless to say, I had the last laugh' territory. 
    There's a throwaway sentence near the end of the book where he says that the scariest agent he ever had to face during his time at Vale Park was Andy Porter's mum! I'd love to read more about this kind of thing and fewer long passages about results and transfer fees.
    Having said that, I'm really glad I've read it as, well, it's Sir John and the money goes to the statue. Just wished it had come out in 1999.

    One other thing I'm pondering is how many players have we signed from Manchester United? Alex Ferguson says that Rudgie was forever telling him sob stories and getting bargains from him but I can't recall more than a couple of their players coming here under JR?

    Yes. Myself and Jonathan Gullis are both concerned about the optics for this as it certainly looks like rewarding criminality. What next? A knighthood for those people who flog knock-off DVDs on the market? The only thing Alfie should be looking forward to is an ASBO and a long stretch in a Young Offenders Institute. At the very least he should be facing an early bed with no supper. 😠

    1) Sometimes sarcasm or irony doesn't work with typed words. It's good to re-read what you've posted and see if it does make sense.

    2) There is an edit function if you don't think so. Perhaps more importantly there's emojis to use to show when you're not being entirely serious.

    3) If you are unsure if it's going to be taken seriously or not then it's often better to err on the side of caution and not post something that might, just might cause offence - even if your intention is not to do so.

    4) Myself or the moderators don't take these moves in isolation. Often the complaint hasn't originated from us. In some cases, it's communications from other users saying "that's not funny" or "that's not on" and we take their views onboard and act accordingly. It's then a subjective decision by us. If we're getting one complaint is that just one person who "doesn't get it" but if we're getting several complaints on something then it's an indication that quite a few users are upset. It may sound like killjoy behaviour at times but just remember we are a broad church and something which one group of users may find funny, another group of users may take offence to.

    5) It's also a two-way street. If we remove something and you disagree, you can contact us to let us know. I will freely admit that I have certainly made moderation mistakes over the years. 

    6) Ultimately, we try to be fair to both sides.

    I hope that gives some context and is of help. We're not trying to block all humour but not all humour works for everyone and if there are enough complaints then we will review and take appropriate action. It's not something done on the whim of a moderator and in isolation.

    Me, Jonathan Gullis and her were having a chuckle about it after the game yesterday, Gullo laughing as he said "He won't need a selfie stick where he's going!" Apparently, Suella is taking an active in the case. Watch this space...
