The problem is we already have Uche & Loft on our books and if we keep Wilson, we are may not bring in another striker or if we do, it will be an untried youngster from the Premier League or Championship especially because Garrity can play up top and because Crosby does not start with 2 strikers at the same time

Perhaps could consider Willo as our ‘loan’  signing (contract terms regards wages/contribution might be similar to a loan signing?) if Thomas goes back and then still sign someone more permanent?  We’re not likely to change our style to suit Loft’s/Uche’s strengths (whatever they are) though having seen the below on Twitter,  great build-up poor (I’m being kind) final ball, we could have Harry Kane upfront and with service like that, still not have a goal scoring striker.

  2. Uche and Lofty have not exactly been the paragon’s of fitness/being injury free and when they have been ‘fit’ they’ve had nowhere near the impact, relatively speaking/goals-wise, JW has when he’s played (I’m not just thinking of yesterday's cameo and appreciate he has anonymous games too) . For me a no brainer as a squad striker/impact sub/impact starter to sub at halftime etc since I’d assume contract terms wouldn’t be outrageous since he wasn’t exactly the top of (or even on) anyone else’s shopping list in the Summer.

I think they’d be more likely than Fleetwood with their owner doing time. Clubs like them two I’d imagine he’d just sit his contract out and try his luck as a free agent rather than go either them or Carlisle.

Blackpool have Jordan Rhodes (on loan ‘til end of the season) who’s already scoring pretty regularly in their formation so not sure what Clarke-Harris would give them unless they’re looking to change tactics or concerned Huddersfield will want Rhodes back next month.

20 games is a much better indicator of the quality in this league than 18 games. We have got 25pts. Multiply that tally by 46 games we get 58 points which is usually mid table. I suppose it depends on your predisposition and whether you ignore the last two games to alter the facts.

As Andrew Lang’s originally quote goes:

‘An unsophisticated forecaster uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp-posts - for support rather than for illumination.’

Lots of unsophisticated forecasters on OVF, me included.😉

I’ve made the last minute decision to go on Saturday, and won’t be able to get to the ticket office. Does anyone know if this one is pay on the gate?

Not sure but may be easier to buy online and collect the ticket on the day at Wycombe’s ticket collection point (it was main reception for me last year since I arrived after kick-off).  Appreciate this may be of no help if you don’t have access to Vales ticket web page. But I’ve done that for all but one of the ‘southern’ away fixtures this season too since I’m not local - for Stevenage FA cup there was actually no ticket when I turned up but my name was on the list and fortunately (?) they gave me a compo.

You would think the majority of our 5k season ticket holders will be there plus 3.1k Boro so should be starting at 8k and then it's all about packing the park.

Imagine the clamour for tickets for the next round !!!!

If our run of drawing the lowest ranked club continues its Everton in the last 4 !!!

Guess you’re assuming Everton beat Fulham and aren’t allowing for the 10 point deduction either which would bring Chelsea into the mix too? Obviously you’re desperate for a trip to Goodison Park.😉

Last League 1 hat trick seems to have been big Akpo in 2007!

Lee Hughes in the 7 v Burton in 2013, but surely Tom Pope scored one after that - can’t think anyone else would have. If it is > 10 years since our last one it must be close to a record (for us) -Chizzy will be getting a statue at this rate.

At least we can sit where we want 😀

As long as the seat you’ve bought is the seat you wanted?

This hits the nail on the head mate. End of thread emoji108.pngemoji106.png

Or is it that the science isn’t flawed but the interpretation of it, by non-scientists, is? For all we know the scientific data could have pointed to Gav, Alfie and Ollie not being fit to start, fit only to play 30 minutes or fit enough for 45, 62 or 96 minutes.  Ultimately it’s the manager who decides how to use the data.

Grief this part of the thread’s beginning to sound like the COVID inquiry 😬

  10. A disclaimer:  My previous couple of posts do not necessarily represent my own views but were an attempt (arguably a poor one) to respond to the original poster’s question of what might Carol and David be seeing (and by inference thinking) that fans are not.

Brilliant. We’re the worst side in league 1 this calendar year. I’d hope they look at that rather than us managing to beat Burton in the 1st round of the fa cup and losing to a side just promoted from league 2 and in our division on a much smaller budget at home.

They probably see that performance/results over the calendar year don’t decide promotion and relegation and believe there’s still 27 games to get 28 points from while the team is still holding onto their tools for AC (it’s too late for me to rephrase that) since it was ultimately the players downing tools late last season that cost DC his job (according to our DoF in last week’s interview) on the back of 2 wins in 18.

As business folk they may pay more attention to and get twitchy by the drop in revenue from gate receipts if attendances slide but that may be forgotten too if we somehow pull a win out of the hat next Tuesday.

What are flickers and carol seeing that we arent that is keeping crosby in a job

17th (lower mid table?) in Lg1, quarter finalists of a major cup competition and knocked out of the other major cup competition on penalties by the 3rd best team (based on league position), I’d imagine. They obviously don’t have our insight and the same feeling of inevitability/crystal ball of how our and all other teams’ in the division next 26/27 games will go.

At this rate Ben Garrity could attract some interest.

What’s a goal scoring L1 midfielder (on trajectory to score double figures), with 18 months left on their contract, worth? > £0.5 mil? Or do we slap a £1mil+ price tag on him to ward off interest/give us cash to buy a replacement or three?

And I give you Ryan Loft.

Both DC previously and recently Rudgie have said, regards recruitment, a club does well to get 70% of new signings right (am assuming that means quality over availability ie a player would be considered when available/not injured).  Of our signings at the moment Ryan Loft and Uche are arguably not in the 70% who else would we say was in the 30%, remembering some players are signed in the context as back-up/squad players not 100% first team started?

Perhaps you can explain how other newspapers manage?  I can go online and read the latest on Stevenage or FGR for example.  It doesn’t take a genius to come up with the idea that the Sentinel could employ just one reporter whose job it is to cover both Stoke and Vale.

Doesn’t take a genius just a reporter who can be in two places at the same time for matches and press conferences that occur concurrently. I’d have assumed it’s simple economics, Stoke have more fans (time in the Prem. created a huge global audience and potential interest in following them from afar and that is still reflected in interest in online news stories etc), ergo more potential ‘readers’ of the on-line pages so the pages attract more advertisers/pop-ups which means the Sentinel/their owners can keep posting articles for ‘free’.  Perhaps the Vale articles didn’t generate enough hits to sell the advertising space so the Sentinel decided not to replace Mike when he left and they can’t afford to pay him now so subsidise that with a ‘fee for story account’?

I agree it stinks that a ‘local’ newspaper doesn’t equally or even adequately cover the two local (3 if you count Crwho) league teams, have any fans written letters to the editor (of the Sentinel/their owners) to complain or threaten a boycott? It would certainly be interesting to see what happens with coverage if the two Stoke-on-Trent teams end up in the same league in the next year or two but in the meantime it is what it is and it’s each fan’s choice to determine the value of The Valiant to them.

I’m really quite angry. In the last week Bristol rovers have appointed Taylor and now Cambridge getting Harris. Both great managers and Harris in particular I’m amazed has dropped to this level. Two great out of work managers been picked up by similar sized clubs to us whilst we arse around with Crosby. When we finally sack him there’ll be no one decent left.

Not sure I’d class Harris as a great manager.  Spent 12 months out of work after Cardiff City sacked him and a Gillingham fan I work with has said he’s no loss to them having taken them down to L2 and looked likely to do the same again if their new American majority shareholder hadn’t splashed the cash last January.  While the Cambridge fans I work with were hopeful rather than excited at the rumour (and now fact) he was coming to the Abbey - hopeful he’d recreate the good days he had at Millwall and his first season at Cardiff.

I have mate. And your first paragraph intimates he scores for fun but is probably way out of our price league.

Which suggests to me were he not he'd be one you'd like ?

Though a striker he may still be relatively cheap for Reading having been signed from Cambridge, with some of his teammates possibly still on Championship wages and the likes of Savage coming in from United. However, have read their head coach/manager and DoF equivalent have recently deferred their wages so others can get paid so guess they may be that desperate they may be happy just to have their academy players (some of whom are very good as well as cheap) as the core of the team and let players like him go.
